Just got back from our stay here (which was 12/10 - 12/15/06). It is in a perfect location right on the Intracoastal waterway, and has amazing ocean views as well. Good area, maybe 6 miles or so from I95, about a $20 cab ride from the airport. There is an upscale mall right behind the hotel which features believe it or not a gourmet food court (which is excellent and has even been written about in local newspapers.)
The water taxi drops you off directly in front of the hotel. It's $10 per ride. For lunch, take it up the waterway for a nice ride past the iguanas and million dollar homes to Charley's Crab- maybe a 15 minute ride.
Overall, this is an excellent stay for anyone visiting Ft Lauderdale and/or Miami (latter is approximately 30 miles to the south- a very easy commute which we did several times + for the money, you get about a thousand times the hotel here vs what you would have to pay in Miami).
The hotel's renovations are complete except for the elevator flooring which was being redone when we were there- no big deal at all. The place is all new - we know because we also stayed here in Dec '05. All new furniture/carpeting/flooring everywhere. The rooms feature a huge new wall-mounted flat panel tv in the living room, new kitchen (marble flooring, granite countertop, new stainless steel appliances, nice new cabinets, sink, disposal, etc), new bathroom (granite/marble shower & countertops) + good water pressure in shower and one of those oversized showerheads. Beds very good quality, very comfortable. Even the pillows were excellent- not the usual cheap foam pillows you tend to find in hotels.
We stayed in room 720, which is on the water side of the hotel w/incredible views of both the Intracoastal and the ocean. It is a one bedroom suite- very comfortable and roomy. The "_20" series rooms on this side have the largest balconies in the hotel (a double - with sliders from both the main/living room AND bedroom leading to it.) You can hear the draw bridge a bit from here, though neither of us were woken up by it at night as the traffic is very light then. During the day & up til maybe 8 or 9pm the bridge opens regularly to let large boats or barges pass but after this time it's much less frequent. There is a brief warning horn sound that goes off to signal it opening & closing. Also, the bridge is metal, so when large trucks drive over it, you can hear it reverberate. Still, the view and huge balcony DEFINITELY makes it worth it.
There are also rooms on the back side of the hotel over the pool which probably don't hear the bridge, but still have balconies and both Intracoastal and ocean views.
Out of curiosity, we asked to be shown one of the 2 bedroom/2 bath suites. It was on the 4th floor and was HUGE, but was located right over the side of the building which faces the street (which is 4 lanes and can be quite busy). I would definitely recommend NOT staying on this side of the hotel due to traffic noise + the lessened water view.
For convenience there is a restaurant and bar in the hotel of course, or you can save money by buying a few groceries as we did, from either the nice Publix grocery store which is maybe 2-3 miles down the road the hotel is located on (Sunrise) or the 7-11 store which is easy walking distance just over the bridge, or even the CVS which is diagonally across the road.
Again, this place is a GREAT alternative for anyone visiting Miami, as noted. Certainly the South Beach hotels are literally double the price or more, for much smaller, louder ROOMS, whereas we paid $200/nite for a huge COMPLETELY NEW SUITE!
Small complaint: the elevators can sometimes be very slow.
I would also strongly recommend you NOT rent rooms in the '_14" or "_17" series as they are immediately across from the elevators, and on floors 3 and 4, are also across from either vending, or guest laundry.
Service overall was good.
