“Great Romantic Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2009

My guest and I choose this hotel for a romantic getaway weekend. Since we have different sleep patterns, staying in a suite is always best for us to avoid disturbing each other. The suite was spacious, yet intimate...and we especially enjoyed the large shower. We found the kitchen to be well equipped to prepare a light meal, eventhough we chose to eat out at night. The hot breakfast buffet was well appointed and exceptionally clean! Valet parking and check-in was fast and efficient. Express check-out was accurate, and without any problems. The pool and hot tub were great, with a waterway view of surrounding condos. The "beach-like" lounge area is very romantic for evening relaxing. If location is everything... then you can't miss with this hotel. Fort Lauderdale Beach is less than 5 minutes away, and bustling Las Olas Blvd. is about 10 minutes away by car. Our stay was great and I will choose Gallery One - Doubletree on my next trip to Fort Lauderdale.

I stayed here with my husband Feb 6-8. I was worried because some people wrote that the service was bad, expensive valet parking and the elevators were broken. It was a great location- right on the intracoastal, 3 minutes walk to trendy restaurants and the upscale Galleria Mall. Very nice rooms. I stayed on the 12th floor and had views of the intracoastal and partial ocean. I also received 2 cookies per person on check in! The only downside is the parking. They now allow you to park yourself but you have to ask for the gate to be raised each time you come in and it still amounts to $19 a day- why, I dont know. There is plenty of parking and the mall also has plenty of parking. Maybe because the beach is close?

Anyway, I had a great time and would definitely recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Doubletree from January 12 – 16, 2009 prior to leaving on a cruise.

The room was great – balcony, bedroom, living room, and efficiency kitchen – with TV in each room. Everything was in great condition. However, there were 2 minor problems. The seal on the balcony door was faulty by design (there was a movable center section for security purposes) and allowed a draft into the room. The bathroom sink faucet was loose and simply needed to be tightened. This was repaired after we brought it to the addition of the front desk.

Everyone at the front desk was helpful and responsive to any problems or questions. They seemed eager to please.

There was never any problem with the elevators. Since a number of reviews mention the slowness of the elevators, I noted how long we had to wait. It was never more than 10 seconds.

The location was great. It was about 1/2 mile from the beach and 1/4 mile from the Gallery One mall where there were a couple of restaurants in addition to the food court. Additionally, the water taxi stops out front and we highly recommend it.

The only negative is paying $21.00 a day for valet parking. There is no self park option. They guys parking the cars were great. The car was generally waiting out front when we got to the front door. There was no confusion regarding this option since the front desk made it very clear that there was a $21.00 charge for parking. This had little value to us since we were not frequently in and out of the hotel.

In general, we were very pleased and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Our hotel stay was ok, but disappointing for a Hilton.
The front desk staff was not attentive. When we checked in, I had to get the 2 ladies attention even though there were no guests at the front desk.
Valet parking for $21 a day is outrageous, not to mention that you feel obligated to always tip them. Self-parking should be made an option, but it isn't available.
The breakfast buffet is good, but it should have a better variety. We were there for 4 nights and the buffet items were always the same.
After our first night stay, our room was never checked by housekeeping. For a Hilton hotel, the housekeeping was slow and below average.
The pool area is deceiving. Most of the pool area is in the shade and the area is small. Get a spot early in the sun
This is not a family-friendly, fun hotel.

I write this review to warn others not to waste your $300 + on this hotel, but rather to spend it elsewhere.
My family and I booked in after a cruise in Decmber 2008 for a 6 night stay.
On check-in we were told under no uncertain terms - by Johannes - at the front desk that "check-in time is 3pm". He took this down to the literal sense and made us wait until EXACTLY 3pm when miraculously the room became available !
The luggage took 1 hour to get from the ground floor to the 9th floor ! And then the porter expected a tip !!
He was seen counting his wad of one dollar notes in full view of everyone.
The lifts NEVER worked - we had to use the service lifts which were dirty and unsafe.

The housekeeping was very poor - room only cleaned at 4pm -except on the check-out day when they wanted to come at 11am ( probably hinting for a tip!).
We were only given toilet paper when we asked for it and for 6 nights had to ration the dishwasher detergent as we were only give 1 sachet.

The valet parking was a rip-of at $21 a night and it took them ages to bring your car - which we could easily have parked ourselves.

To add insult to injury - a day after check-out ( where we paid in full ) we were charged $1 500 extra ! Only after going to the HILTON headoffice was this sorted out.

In the economic crisis that the USA is in at the moment - this hotel is headfing for disaster !

DON'Y STAY HERE. There is a gorgeous hotel - GRAND PELICAN RESORT closeby - where we wished we had known about !!!!!!

I stayed at the Gallery One on January 9 & 10, 2009 and enjoyed my stay. My friend and I had a 2 queen suite with a City View. I thought I would miss having a water view, but I really didn't miss it at all.

Postives
Although the suite appeared much larger in the photos, it was a good size and very comfortable.
The bed was the best ever.
Check in was a breeze.
The staff was very friendly
The shower was great
The location was great

Negatives
Housekeeping was lacking. They left our breakfast food containers on our table and the room smelled a bit when we returned. (I take some blame for this because we should have picked up after ourselves.)

I reserved for 2 nights, but my credit card was authorized for three nights. On the day of check out, my folio indicated that I had been charged for one night. I had no idea of my actual charges until I returned home and the charges cleared.

The elevators were slow. But, it didn't detract from my stay.

Tips

Beware of taxi drivers who over charge. We paid $38 dollars for a trip from the airport to the hotel. We made the mistake of telling the driver it was our first time in the area.

Take the Water Taxi. It stops right in back of the hotel and you will not regret it. We arrived on Friday and took the taxi that evening. We rented a car on Saturday, returned it on Sunday and the car rental company took us to the airport.

If you rent a car with a GPS system, be sure the system is set on "shortest route" especially if you have a limited number of miles. The system really came in handy, but it did seem to take us on longer routes. A trip that should have taken us 20 minutes ended up taking us 45 minutes. This occurred more than once. "Fastest Route" is not always fast. Trust your instincts - if you feel like the system is taking you the long way around - it probably is.

We booked 2 ocean view suites. Enjoyed the spacious rooms, spacious bathroom, kitchenette with coffee-tea maker, refrigerator. Tv in living room; another in bedroom. Received complementary continental breakfast coupons at check-in, which could be upgraded to a full breakfast for $5 pp. Suite offered a telephone help line, which was okay for routine inquiries.
Excellent location-short walk to public beach, Galleria mall, with Capital Grille, Seasons 52 and Blue Martini Bar, CVS drug store. No movie theatre close by --(another costly cab ride to/from the "nightclub district" to view Jim Carrey in Yes Man in a very rundown theatre.) . We did not have a rental car; had to rely on taxis. ($37 from airport to hotel for 4 of us.) Water taxi stops at hotel dock. Ate lunch at outdoor tables.
Did not use balcony- too noisy, too industrial and view was mostly of traffic going over bridge and of building across street! Also, all of the cabs we took were very marginal and probably are only able to survive because they do not have to operate in cold weather conditions!
