“Front Desk was terrible but room was average- great value....”

Fort Lauderdale Ramada Plaza Hotel & Resort

Jul 7, 2008

After reading reviews, I was terribly frightened, however this is a standard 2 star property with an upgraded pool in comparison to other 2 stars I've stayed in previously. The pool has a nice tiki bar, and plenty of comfortable seating.

There is one sports bar in walking distance, Players- I highly recommend them for food and drinks. They have excellent happy hours- it may look a little shady on the outside but is awesome on the inside- each booth has its own tv so that's a plus and on Sunday's they have $1.00 bottled beer among other specials. Children are welcome.

We booked through Orbitz at under $600.00 for flight, hotel and car for five nights out of San Antonio- so we could not complain.

We were however walked to the Days Inn- Oakland Park (which I would not recommend) though we made it back to the Ramada for our next four nights.

Front desk staff was very rude, seemed like they never had the answers and I tried to avoid them as much as possible.

We were also charged a $5.00 per day resort fee on top of our orbitz package, and when asked why this was not included in our pkg. front desk had no clue how to explain this.

Hotel does have a Florida Visitor center attached and we were invited to get a free gift on our first night- however we did not make it in.

This hotel is about a 20-25 minute drive to the beach- but in close proximity to the Marlins Stadium, Seminole Casino, and plenty of strip mall shopping. To avoid paying tolls on the turnpike, head to I-95 via Commercial Blvd. Commericial will also take you to the Beach.

Watch out for the internet kiosk- they will overcharge you and when you approach the front desk, they have no clue on how to work the kiosk.

I will be as nice as I can about this review.

The first thing I have to mention is the pungent smell of mildew in the hallways and rooms. It was very strong and I could smell it everytime I walked in or opened and shut a door.

The rooms as far as furniture were dated but ok. Housekeeping could have done a better job also.

The pool is pretty decent and the hot tub is nice and HOT.

The little tiki bar out by the hot tub makes a great, but, expensive drink.

The food at The Ramada was just ok. Not Good, but not horrible.

Bottom line, only stay here if you absolutely have to.....ie..RCI timeshare

Having read the previous reviews, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived, nice reception area and restaurant, lovely pool area with bar, beautiful shrubs & trees, nice & warm pool & above all spotlessly clean. our room was very clean & well decorated. a/c o.kay. everything worked, nice clean bathroom. new mattress on bed. no problems at all. a standard 2 star hotel.a slight musty smell in corridors, 1 lift out of action.

I am appauled! I feel like a fool! I read the reviews before I went to this hotel, my husband told me based on the reviews we shouldn't go, the reason I gave it a try anyway because I had a certifcate for a free 3 day 2 night stay in FortLauderdale as a gift from taking a time share, also I noticed it was a big hotel with dining rooms and restaurants and special events were held there so I said it couldn't be that bad,- what a disaster, words can't expressed how low budget and tacky this hotel is, let me tell you, the parking lot first of all is scary, there are too many people hanging around the lot and no parking in the front only way in the back (bad lighting) 2nd inside the building is lower then low, carpet, walls elevator comparable to a inner city project or low subsidy housing, the rooms smelled of smoke mixed with beer and liquor, they looked very drabby, the view is of the dark slummy parking lot and roof tops, they tack on a $12 per day resort fee for nothing, things were so bad and uneasy that at 3am in the morning we packed up and left and went to a nearby hotel the LaQuinta Inns and suites that was pleasurable! If you read this review, believe me when I tell you, I am a very fair and honest person, If after reading this review and you stay there anyway -Good Luck! Just remember, YOU WERE WARNED!

Up front, I should say that I stayed at this property with a friend who was here for a timeshare presentation. I don’t know what the criteria are for a hotel to call itself a “resort”, but this one must have just barely squeaked by. It seems to me that a resort should be near a beach or an amusement park or something of interest to tourists; this was near a business airport.

Our room was on the 5th (top) floor. During our stay, one of the two elevators was out of service, and we discovered that it was much easier and quicker to walk down the stairs that take our chances on whether the one working elevator would make it all the way to the ground floor.

The room (#555) definitely showed its age. Despite it being a nonsmoking room, there was an ashtray in the room. The bedspreads were worn out, and even when the bed was made, it looked like somebody had been jumping on it. The blanket on my bed had a cigarette burn, and there were a couple of cigarette stains on the ledge of the bathtub as well. I do have to say that the beds were surprisingly comfortable, though. The bathtub had some mildew around the faucet, and the wallpaper in the bathroom was pulling away from the wall. Although the water during our stay looked reasonably clean, the notice posted in the bathroom (titled “Yellow Water”) -- stating that the health department regularly checked the water and found it to be suitable for human use -- was unsettling.

The hotel restaurant was nothing special. The food on the buffet seemed to be rather plain, and we discovered that ordering off the menu yielded better choices. The waitstaff was friendly, although sometimes a bit difficult to find.

The one bright spot here was the pool area. A nice big pool, plenty of lounge seats and chairs, an oversized hottub, and the nearby bar area were all memorable.

If you find yourself in the Tamarac area of Northeast Fort Lauderdale, and there aren’t any other hotel rooms available anywhere else, then this place will do until you are able to make other arrangements. Otherwise, plan ahead, spend the extra money, and stay in a nicer hotel closer to the places you came to Fort Lauderdale to see.

P.S. – My friend said “No” to the timeshare!
