Having traveled in over 30 countries myself, and having owned & operated a five star, gourmet Bed & Breakfast in Victoria, British Columbia, I will say with ease that I am a bit of a tough customer, but I also know the challenges faced in hospitality. This place is not in any way doing it's job, and presents a huge detriment to the Hyatt's reputation. I personally will choose Hilton, Wyndam or Sheraton in the future.
We stayed at the Hyatt Pier 66 on March 30th, the night before a cruise. We ordered two rooms, one for my parents and one for myself and a friend. My parents had secured a seniors rate over the internet and we had a regular rate. It seemed slightly below Hyatt rates, although not outrageously. I should have been suspicious.
Right from the check in it was a gong show. We were told our rooms could not be near one another, and my parents (in their 70s) were walked a good five minutes to the other side of the resort. When the bellman opened the door to their room, it was immediately apparent that the room was already occupied. A gentleman emerged from the bathroom as they entered the suite.
So back they came to the front desk, only to be given the room directly beside us, despite having been told such proximity was unavailable. Because of the change/mix-up, they were also told they could not have the seniors rate, and were charged an additional $40. Outrageous!
We went to the lounge where we were assured we could get a decent casual meal. The food was barely adequate and overpriced. The big shock though was the service. The serving staff botched every single thing, ignored us most of the time, and were outright rude. At the end of the meal my mother ordered a dessert. They did not ask if anyone else wanted anything, and when the dessert came there was no spoon with it. Just as I asked for a spoon the other server emerged with the forgotten coffee, and the first server exclaimed "oh look at that, here is a spoon just as you asked." Normally I would have let this go, but given the record I responded "ok, well then could we have a spoon for the coffee?"
When our bill arrived we discovered that an 18% gratuity was automatically charged regardless of the size of the party. That went a long way to explaining the crappy service.
At breakfast the next morning the story was the same. Missing bacon on the plate, no cream for the coffee, no serving staff available when you are ready to pay your bill, and your 18%. Utterly abysmal all round.
Then you have the $16 per day resort fee. We were aware of this fee prior to arrival, so I take no issue - I did not feel sideswiped by it. However, we were told upon check in that this was intended to cover cost for the pool, local calls, and internet. No point in arguing right? So in the morning my friend and I decided we would pop into the business centre to check our e-mail before departing. We were informed that this was not covered by the $16 fee and we would have to pay.
Starting at 8 in the morning there were multiple knocks on the door. The first person asked to come in and check the mini-bar, and after that there were at least three attempts to come in to clean. Don't these people have computers? I suppose this explains how my parents were checked in to an occupied room. Checkout isn't until noon but clearly we were inconveniencing them.
The room itself was nice and recently renovated, but it was not clean.
I don't know what else to say. I know this review is long, but the disappointment warrants it. I have travelled to one-star pensiones that offered better service, value and amenities than this hotel, and I am amazed the Hyatt lends it's name and logo to it.
Our last night outbound from our cruise we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Sea/Airport. $60 less per night, spotless, free computer to use for internet, outdoor pool, fridges in room, free breakfast, happy hour from 5-7 pm with FREE beer & wine, and a free shuttle to the airport, even at the ungodly hour of 5:30.
Hmmm, which would you choose next time....
