I'll begin by saying that I was extremely nervous about staying at the Pier66 Hyatt because of all the reviews I had read. However, my Company travel agent booked the room, so I decided to take a few "preventative measures".
Before arriving, I called the hotel and explained that I have severe allergic reactions to mold (doesn't everyone??) and I requested a newly renovated room. I also explained that I would not accept a room if it had not been cleaned properly, and I would not want to find it necessary to call in the local health board to inspect.
First, the pros:
*I was given a fabulous room - spacious, super clean, completely renovated and with an absolutely gorgeous bath!
*The bed was amazingly comfortable with a light down comforter and six of the most comfortable pillows imaginable.
*My room was out of the lobby building and on the ground level overlooking the pool, but this wasn't a problem as the grounds were very well-lit. I walked to and from the Pelican Bar and the lobby area severals times during the late hours and always saw other guests walking around, so the area was never deserted.
*The staff at the front entrance, reception area and grounds keeping were exceptionally accommodating and friendly - always ready to answer questions or to help.
*The lobby bar (a little on the small side) had a very entertaining and smiling bartender who kept the patrons laughing while eating and/or having a cocktail at the bar.
*The pool itself has been beautifully renovated, clean and was very relaxing. In fact, the grounds were well-maintained.
Now, the cons:
*The $12.00 fee added to the room seems a bit excessive since I didn't use the fitness room or the other "amenities" the fee was supposed to cover. In all fairness, the hotel is very upfront about the fee...nothing hidden here!
*After taking my second shower, I realized that I needed to run the shower for several minutes BEFORE getting under the spray, as it took that long for the water to get hot. It's too bad that so much water must be wasted just to provide for a warm/hot shower.
*Breakfast can be an expensive affair with $20.00 for a hot/cold continental buffet, and $14.00 for a simple cold continental buffet.
*It would have been nice to have a coffee maker in my room, although I did hear from other guests that some rooms had one. Maybe that was the price to pay for a beautiful bathroom! :-) I did find a place across the street that had great take-out coffee for under $1.50.
*Probably my only MAJOR con is that the maintenance staff begins their day way too early in the morning. This can be intrusive and disturbing with the clanging, banging and chatter outside guestrooms.
All in all, my experience was a positive one at the Hyatt Pier 66. I would recommend letting the hotel front desk personnel know in advance that you want (no, EXPECT) to receive value for the money that you are spending to stay at the establishment.
