As a 10 year Platinum member of Starwood Preferred Guest, I have had the pleasure to stay at a hundred or more SPG properties over the years and generally find the Westin brand to be tops for business travellers in many categories. Unfortunately, this Westin would have trouble competing for a spot on the lower end of the SPG chain hotels, although it charges on the high end. For example:
At check-in, we got nothing for our top status. No upgrades, no water view, no free breakfast (although you could use your standard amenity for a cheapo continental breakfast), no SPG lounge usage, no water view, and we weren't even placed on the SPG floor despite calling three days in advance to make sure we were accommodated for properly. The room we were provided was very small for the money and had filthy windows - although to be fair, the property is located on the beach. The room itself was generally clean, but the carpet was too scary looking to put my child down on to play. Again, beach-goers probably necessitate carpet cleaning / replacement more frequently. The room also smelled distinctly like mint-mouthwash - perhaps someone hoping to save on cleaning supplies??
Outside the room wasn't much better. The pool on the third floor was OK, but at about 8AM, I had a pool-boy ask my daughter and I to move from the only shaded spot on the deck so he could clean the lounge chair we were sitting on. The lobby was fairly innocuous, but there was a TV in the front that was blasting ESPN at top volume with no remote in site. As no one was watching, I have to assume that was for the employees benefit, not the guests. In a Westin, they should leave the lobby TV on a financial or news channel at low to moderate volume - or give the guest the remote.
Finally a pleasant surprise. Believe it or not, the valet parking attendants! They were nothing short of awesome. In fact, I have never seen a more professional and courteous group of valet attendants anywhere! I watched them for about 15 minutes one morning while waiting for someone and saw them redirect lost people, greet guests, move cars quickly and efficiently, ensure people had all their necessary items upon arrival and departure - all without that vibe that nearly all valet parking attendants have that subliminally screams "give me some cash!" These guys should write the manual on how to run a valet operation for other top hotels to follow!
Consider a different hotel unless you are staying here in the low season.
