We stayed at the Beach Palace Oct 30-Nov 2, 2008. I was extremely worried because I booked before I read some of the reviews and had no idea what we were in for. I must say it wasn’t the Hyatt but for the price and location we needed it was a great place to stay for a few days. I would definitely stay here again. Traveling with another couple we had rooms 305 and 306 on the third floor. I'm sure this motel was grand in its day and the ocean views were perfect before the high rises went up across the street. The rooms are large, good AC, cold fridge, nice balcony, no hair dryers but I brought my own and we could see the ocean between the high rises. Our room had new carpet and was clean. My husband is a fanatic about clean sheets and bed bugs so he stripped everything for a thorough search and all turned up fine.
Our friends’ room was missing part of the bathroom mirror and they had a glitch with the electricity. First they thought the TV wouldn’t work but it turned out to be a breaker in the electrical panel. Maintenance came right up and flipped the switch and they had no other electrical troubles after that. It appears that work has been done to update. I hope they continue as this is a grand old place.
We had the continental breakfast at the Beach Palace one morning. It was just ok. Toast, muffins, waffles, donuts, OJ and coffee.
We are walkers so we found plenty of places to access the beach and ocean not far from the hotel. This time of year the beach was almost empty so it was nice. Coming from Massachusetts we couldn’t wait to get in the warm water.
We took the airport shuttle for $9.00 each from the airport as we weren’t picking up our car for a few days. I believe they charge more if there is only one person in the party but it was perfect and they were right there to pick us up in the van. Get their contact info from the clerk when you book.
We were there for the Fort Lauderdale boat show so it was a convenient walk to the water shuttle at Shooters Waterfront Café off of Oakland Boulevard. Also convenient was the CVS directly across the street and a short walk up from CVS was a Winn Dixie grocery store. We stocked up on water, beer, yogurt, fruit and snacks. In a little plaza by Winn Dixie was DaVinci’s pizza which was very good and a little deli that had a nice breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. For the coffee people there is a Dunkin’ Donuts here as well. Nick’s Italian Restaurant was just a short walk down the street in the other direction and we had dinner there one night. It was very good and reasonably priced. We did not eat at the restaurant at the hotel-“Our Place” so I can’t comment on that.
We took the water taxi from Shooter’s to the boat show the first day and the second day we wanted to get there a bit quicker so we asked about alternative transportation at the front desk. We were warned the taxis were a bit much so I asked about the local bus. The clerk called the airport shuttle service instead (I think it was TJ’s transportation) and it was perfect. They charged $7.00 each to the show and gave us the phone number to call when we were ready to come back. They met us and $7.00 each took us back to the motel. The shuttle drivers were pleasant, talkative and gave good advice for restaurants, shopping, etc.
I agree with the review from June 26, 2008- a decent value for a good place to stay in Fort Lauderdale for a few days.
