“Great, clean!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2011

We went to Key Largo with no particular plan, the hotels there were over $150 per night and only a few sketchy ones to be had. We drove back to Florida City and followed the reviews on tripadvisor and were completely happy with this choice. Friendly staff, clean room.

The folks at the front desk were great but that was the only part that was as I would expect from a Holiday Inn Express. The rooms were a bit dingy and definitely dated. The most disappointing part was the pool. The pool was old and dirty as was the patio surrounding it. My daughter spent a short time in it then got out to find no towels. Breakfast was okay but the food area was a bit more cramped than most similar hotels. The place is not really close to restaurants but is surrounded by drive through liquor stores. There was a car broken into in the parking lot overnight.

Flying through Miami, we wanted to visit the Keys without the hassel and expense of staying on the Keys. Did a day trip down to Key West (about a 3 hour drive). Service was fine, price was cheaper than the keys and the hotel was well maintained. It is kind of hard to see as it sits behind a gas station and strip mall, but the grounds are nice.

To put it all in a nut shell, a late check out was requested & honored by the front desk. A clerk calls & kicks us out of the room, leaving us stranded in the lobby for hours until our ride got there to pick us up. Seriously, we could have been offered an additional night & stayed until it was time to leave. The hotel was not busy at all!! After emailing the general manager of this place & still no response back.. I get where her employees get their training.
I will never stay here again.

The hotel was older and carpeting was dirty. I could have lived with that but the beds were the worse I have ever encountered. Sagging mattesses with springs that were broken and squeaked with every move. Nice location to go to the everglades, but terrible nights sleep.

Found this hotel through the local tourist office. To be honest we were sceptical about staying in a Holiday Inn Express but we were wrong to be. The hotel is situated just off Highway 1 but as it is set back from the road and has good double glazing no road noise is heard. The rooms are very large, modern, clean, and contain everything you need. The real bonus is the close location to the Everglades Park - a truely wonderful place. 10 dollars buys the car and all occupents admission to the park for 7 days. Graet value. Go to Royal Palm and walk the two trails there to get the best views of the wildlife. Breakfast is included in the room rate and there are plenty of restaurants and fast food chains around for other meals. We went to Capri (good Italian) and Mariners (a so so seafood restaurant). A must do is a visit to Aligator Farm to ride an air boat. The trip down to Flamingo is also very worth while.

Based on our recent experience, I have reconsidered my previous rating.

With 1/2-stars unavailable, I'd originally rated this property "5" (out of 5) although I'd thought 4 1/2 would have been more accurate. After a slightly less successful two-night stay, I'm convinced that, dropping a 1/2 now leaves my correct rating at "4".

Everything positive I'd previously indicated still makes this a solid choice in the Florida City area, where most properties have received mixed reviews from Trip Advisor reviewers. It is one of the few properties near the beginning of the only two roads to the Keys that feature inside corridors and elevator service to upper floors, and, in our experience, cleanliness has been excellent and maintainence very good. We find their bedding, also, excellent, and sleep well there.

We did have some minor problems on our recent stay:
-A minor maintainence problem, a faulty sink drain, was repaired promptly when brought to the front desk's attention.
-A new television system had been installed and worked well, but we could find no guide channel, nor was there any usable channel listing in the room; the printed one was for their previous system and was incorrect. The only listing available was on-screen, but it flashed by too quickly to be useful, and could not be paused.
-More problematically, calls to the front desk were not answered; this may be because of understaffing of the desk.
-We value highly the availability of wired broadband access; we consider it far more secure than wireless, particularly unsecured wireless, access. We had had minor problems with this property's wired broadband in the past; this time the situation was far worse. The first night the system simply failed after working for about an hour; I tried an alternate computer and then tried both on their wireless system, but none worked. I gave up, (my wife was asleep and I didn't want to wake her calling tech support). The next morning both wired and wireless were working again. When I reported the problem to the front desk, a guest checking out reported that he and others in his party had also experienced a problem. The gentleman at the desk indicated he had not been there at the time, but would try to make sure that overnight staff would know how do reset the system should a problem recur. It did the next morning, very inconveniently as I had work to do. I called and got through to the front desk, and was told he'd reset the system, but I still could not access the internet. I spent over a 1/2 hour with telephone tech support to no avail other than confirmation that the problem was not with either of my computers.
-At checkout, when I complained, I received an apology. He confirmed that their two public computers in the lobby also could not access the internet.

In sum, these minor problems actually diminished our enjoyment of our stay; had our need for internet service been more urgent we would have been very put out; as it was we simply waited 'till we checked in elsewhere that evening, but felt obliged to update my previous review. My advice would be to subtract one star if reliable broadband is important to you, and another 1/2 if price is a particular issue as this property is relatively expensive for what it is. Add a 1/2 star if being at the very closest property to the Keys is important.
