not to bad but the wait is long on weekends
We always eat at The Surf at least once while we are visiting Fernandina. I can't remember ever eating inside, but you can. We always sit on the large porch outside. It is across the street from the beach (no sand), but you can see the water. We have eaten there Spring, Summer and Fall and have always opted to sit outside. You can typically just seat yourself at the table of your choice. They have two bars and multiple TVs for the sports fans in your party. They have live music every evening. We've been hearing the same guy there for years and he plays lots of 70s - 80s favorites that bring back memories. We have two pre-teen children and we've never seen a rowdy crowd at lunch or dinnertime. Seems to be a local favorite and not just a tourist spot. Their salads are all served in a huge flour tortilla shell - that's what I usually order. The kids like the salads but they've also ordered burgers, steak, chicken, etc. My husband often orders the All You Can Eat special. We've always had friendly service and felt the prices were fair.
My husband, some friends and I went to The Surf last weekend and had the absolute worst experience. Never in my life have I been treated so poorly by not only the waitress, but the hostess and the manager!
When we arrived we decided that we wanted to sit outside on the patio. Since it was a Friday night the patio was packed. We stood in front of the hostess for a moment before she told us to "just sit anywhere." So we asked her where there might be an available table. "Over there somewhere," she said waving her hand nowhere in particular. After a few minutes of wandering around the patio looking for a table for 8, we gave up and went inside.
The waitress who took our order looked so put out by our presence. She barely managed a smile the entire time. Then when she messed up our drink order. I was trying to keep calm, it was a busy night after all. But then she messed up our food orders. She scrambled around trying to make it right, but never smiled or apologized for her mistakes.
When the bill arrived (in the $150-$200 range) I asked the waitress why we had been charged for every one of her mistakes. She called over the manager and left me to explain our issue. The manager said what the waitress did was correct and that was our final bill. The manager was also extremely rude and looked like she wanted us to just shut up and leave. At that point I'd had enough.
I can understand if the waitress is new and makes a few mistakes. I can understand if the hostess is busy. But I simply do not understand how a manager can be so rude to a group that dropped nearly $200 at their establishment! Stay away from The Surf, there are so many other wonderful restaurants in the area.
We ate here our first night on Amelia Island. I had the chicken burrito wrap and it was quite tasty. My husband enjoyed his burger, and my son loved his chicken fingers. The PB and J was an uncrustable that was heated or something, so left something to be desired. All in all a nice dining experience. It was nice to eat outdoors, especially with 2 children who had been in the car all day. Friendly wait staff, good food.
i lived in fernandina beach up until about a month ago. and my friends and i always went to the surf. its one of my favorites! the crab soup is excellent! its one of the things i miss most about the island. it has a great atmosphere and you almost alwyas seee at least one person that you know in there ( its a popular hang out spot) the live singing and bands are great and i try to make it a point to go on wing night!
