“First time in a B&B. Won't be the last.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2008

This was the first time for my wife and I to try a B&B. On the one hand, I'm glad we picked this one. On the other hand, all others will have a hard time living up to the Addison.

The main house, our room (#8), and the beautiful grounds were all very clean and well maintained. My wife is the classic germophobe when it comes to travelling and she was as comfortable at the Addison as she is in our own home.

Bob and Shannon were as gracious hosts as anyone could hope to find. Always around, but never "in your business." They claim to be rookies at this whole inkeeper thing, but I think they've secretly been doing it for lifetimes. How else can they be so good at it? It truly felt like we were staying with old friends after just a few hours.

The food was fantastic. We considered staying one more night just for another breakfast! The inn has a covered porch attached to the main house and overlooking the private courtyard. This is the place to be for breakfast. You can also choose to dine inside the main house's dining room, or take breakfast in your room. But who goes to Florida to stay inside? (P.S. buy a cookbook from the inn. It has the Orange Pancake recipe in it along with a lot of other really good ones.)

The Addison is not located on the beach, but in the historic district of Fernandina Beach (the town, not the sandy stuff). The beach is a 2 minute car ride or a 10 minute bike ride. If you feel up to it, you could walk to it. The inn has bikes available. They're great for exploring the side streets of the town. Bob's bike collection is...umm...eclectic, but that's one of the many charms of this place.

They have beach towels, chairs, and beach umbrellas, so don't worry about hauling that stuff with you.

Not everything can be absolutely perfect so there must be something bad...Well yes. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room that doesn't face the street (#8 does). The inn is about a block and a half off of a busy road that has some semi-truck traffic moving all night to some factories a few miles up the road. By busy I mean by small town standards. It's a two-lane road, not the D.C. Beltway, but enough to bother a light sleeper.

[Travel tip]
If you plan time on the beach, don't stick around Main Beach for too long unless you want lifeguards. There are small parking areas all along the beach nestled in between houses and marked with "Beach Access #X" signs. These are all public access areas and you can probably find a stretch of beach all to yourself, even in the busy season.

  • Liked — I hear that innkeepers make or break an inn. Bob and Shannon deffinately
  • Disliked — That our stay wasn't longer. This really is one of the best places I've evr stayed.

Addison on Amelia is the perfect place to rest and be pampered. Bob and Shannon have created an atmosphere of peace and welcome here. The rooms are furnished with wonderfully comfortable beds, and my room had a beautiful new shower. Breakfast is delicious, and the 5:00 p.m. wine on the porch is an extra special touch, especially since the host and hostess offer their relaxed company. It's a few blocks from the center of town, so quiet and relaxed at night, offering a restful sleep. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance that are delightful, as well. I highly recommend Addison on Amelia!

I suprised my husband with a night at the Addison on Amelia for his birthday. I picked the Addison because of the reviews online and because the overall appearance of the place when looking at their website. The Addison was better than I expected it to be. The place was immaculate, fresh flowers throughout the house. All the rooms we viewed had their own unique qualities that made you want to pick them for your nights stay. We chose room #10 and was amazed at the over sized bathtub. It was big enough to swim in. The linens felt so inviting in the king size bed. The innkeepers Bob and Shannon made us feel welcome and wanted. They tended to our every need. The breakfast was divine. My only regret was that we only had one night to stay there. We promised to return soon with our teenage daughters to experience more from what the Addison has to offer. You won't be dissapointed if you choose to stay there. C&V

Excellent stay at the Addison. Bob & Shannon run a warm, friendly, top-notch operation and are attentive hosts who still respect, and give you, space and privacy. The Addison itself is a stunning property with clean, beautifully appointed and inviting rooms that will provide the ideal backdrop for the rest & relaxation you expect to enjoy at a B&B inn. Come hungry---Shannon prepares phenomenal breakfasts and delicious snacks for happy hour, while Bob plays host and server, ensuring all your needs are attended to and your cups are always full. We've stayed at many B&B's over the years and the Addison is our favorite on so many levels. We recommend this inn whole heartedly and when we return to Amelia Island, we will definitely become guests of Bob & Shannon's again.

Pros: Walking distance to historic downtown, restaurants and dock; easy bicycle ride or drive down to the beach; yummy breakfast & happy hour; peaceful setting & rooms; friendly, attentive hosts.

Cons: None with the inn, but the Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach street cleaning machine cleaning streets before 6 AM can get loud (especially when you're in a corner room). Not sure, but this may only be a weekday (or certain day) occurrence.

  • Liked — comfy bed, great bathroom, breakfast & happy hour
  • Disliked — not having more time to spend at this B&B on our trip

Just returned from a weekend getaway at the Addison on Amelia Island and I must say we had a fantastic time!

The hosts, Bob and Shannon were wonderful and very knowledgeable about the island. Bob suggested that after dinner we stop by the bay and watch the sunset.... which was amazing. After that he said we should stop by the local ice cream shop and pick something up for the walk back to the B&B. Such a perfect idea. Shannon's breakfasts were terrific and a great way to start the day.

The rooms were spacious and beautiful. My favorite part was the huge bathtub! I also loved the complimentary bicycles that they have for guests to use. We took the bikes down to the beach with us. The bathtub came in handy after that, the perfect way to relax.

Bottom Line - The Addison on Amelia is a fabulous place to stay and we will definitely be returning soon! Thanks so much Bob and Shannon!

We chose the Addison on Amelia for our recent stay at Fernandina Beach. We thoroughly enjoyed the room and the hospitality we received. I love a good breakfast, and it did NOT disappoint! Was right up there with staying at a 5-star hotel as far as service and amenities. We had a shower, not a tub as others have stated, but our shower was a very nice spa shower with 2 heads. Will definitely return in the years to come.

The hubby and I just returned from a fantastic stay at The Addison. We selected The Addison after reading other reviews here on TripAdvisor and we are so glad we did! Our room was super clean and very nice. The bed was the most comfortable we've ever experienced on a trip. And the huge spa shower - very relaxing after spending the day on the beach. The courtyard is beautiful w/ all types of flowers and huge, old oak trees. There's not enough nice things to say about the inn keepers Bob, Shannon and their daughter Leigh. They always made you feel welcome. I am allergic to a lot of fruits and they went out of their way to make me special dishes that I could eat. The breakfast was always to die for - fluffy eggs, fresh fruits, yogart, muffins, pancakes, french toast and more. Coffee cups were always kept full. Happy hour was always enjoyable and the snacks were always yummy. If you are planning to go to the beach, they offer comfy beach chairs, towels and umbrellas and they offer bikes for exploring the island. The Addison is w/in walking distance to fantastic restaurants (Bob & Shannon's recommendations were always right on the money) and walking distance to the shops in the historic part of town. This was our first B&B experience and we def recommend staying here if you are planning a trip to Amelia Island!! We look forward to returning.
