“Expected more based on Trip Advisor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2010

We took the 1.5 hour tour which included a trip to the island. The island needs work! The house doesn't look authentic, you can only walk around it, and there is a lot of trash on it. Our captain was great, very informative and professional. Unfortunately our boat puttered out and we had to drift in at the end. Prior to our tour there was a captain arguing with someone who appeared to be part of the 'family' who owned the company. The Captain wanted to do maintenance on his engine and the owner was telling him no due to time. I can see why some other reviewers have had their boats stop if this occurs regularly.

Overall you spend about 40 minutes (20 in and 20 out) in a no wake zone with not much to see. 20 minutes on the island which I would avoid, and 20 minutes zipping thru the Mangrove trees which was the highlight of the tour. There were two alligators which almost seemed domesticated if that's possible but since I've never seen one up close it was pretty cool.

I haven't done any other airboat tours in the Everglades so I have nothing to compare it to. It was an experience so to that end I would recommend but I wouldn't do it again for the price.

“Great staff and a fun trip!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2010

We took a 1-hour tour of the Everglades with Everglades Island Airboat tour on 2/18/2010. This tour turned into a 1-1/2 hour adventure and a wonderful time. We selected Everglades Island airboat because they have small boats (the last time I did am airboat tour of the Everglades we had 30 people on the boat). On this boat we just had my family; my wife, daughter, son, and me. Captain Darryl was really great (he grew up in the area so he knew a ton about this Everglades). About half-way through our tour our airboat broke down and this ended up being the best part of the tour. While we waited for other boats to come try to fix our boat, we got to hear great stories from Captain Darryl and got to meet a lot of the staff. Overall, it was a great tour and a lot of fun.

Two tips: First, if you just want to see alligators then go down Rt. 41 to Turner River Road. We saw three alligators within 50 feet of the parking lot and got within 10 feet of one. Second, if you tour around lunch time, eat at Backcountry Café just down the road from Everglades Island Airboat. The food was excellent and the service was great.

“Enjoyed the airboat ride and our Captain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2010

We really enjoyed this part of our vacation. We went on the 1 1/2 trip that included a stop at Totch's Island. If we go again, we will go on the shortened version without the island stop. I was disappointed in the cabin built on the island. The adverstisements show the cabin completely covered with thatch and I had a read a story about Totch passing while putting in the wood floor. The actual building is covered in plywood with an aluminum roof and a peel and stick vinyl floor. Not at all authentic like advertised. It wouldn't take much for them to clean up this island and make it a worthwhile stop on their tour. We did see one alligator for sure and just the boat ride alone was worth the money.

“A great trip with "real" Floridians - Totch's Island and mangroves”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2010

The reason we selected this airboat tour was because the website mentioned that it is owned by "4th and 5th generation" local guides. This is not a tour operated by city transplants! These folks all grew up right here and know the area like the backs of their hands.

My husband and I opted for the longer tour which includes both the mangroves and Totch's Island. Totch was a native who lived his whole life in the Everglades, hunting and trapping, and he wrote a book about his adventures. The little island named for him was created when the government dredged some of the bay and dumped the spoils in a pile, thus creating the "island". Totch built a cabin on the island and spent years here writing and working on projects. After he died his daughter was able to buy the island - and this is the only tour company which goes there, since it is Totch's descendants who own this company :-)

We had a great trip out to the island and spent about 15 minutes wandering around and listening to our guide talk about the history of it. Then we headed for the mangrove swamps. Before we got there we passed right over a manatee! The manatee was completely safe though, since airboats have no propellers.

Zipping through the mangroves was a lot of fun! We were behind another boat for awhile, then our guide took us off along another route. We saw some large alligators and lots of birds. Some of the waterways are hardly wider than the boat itself.

This is a great trip and it was so refreshing to be around down-to-earth folks who have lived here forever. I highly recommend this company!

“Fantastic way to see the Everglades!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2008

We have been on other airboat rides in the past but this was the best! We got to see alligators close up, explored a small island and has a pelican land on our boat for some great photos. We loved the whole experience and would highly recommend it.
