“A Trip back in Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

My husband and I were traveling by boat through Florida. This was one of our destinations that neither one of us had been to but some how knew it was a place we needed to visit. We almost missed it as we were so busy looking at the dolphins swimming and listening to all of the birds. When we saw the sign of the Rod & Gun Club we knew that this was the place to be. It was like being on a river cruise that takes you to a place that you can't reach by car. This was for sure a throw back in time if you ever grew up in the keys or ever visited them years ago (1960) you will love this place. The food was unreal we had a surf and turf that no one on the mainland can touch the whole dining experience was something you'd never forget. The staff was attentive and everyone having dinner seemed as pleased as we were. The table we sat as was on a screened porch looking south with perfect view of the water. The ceiling fans and wicker furniture were a just perfect setting for listening to the waterfall from the pool and it is natural coral. The cabins was for sure rustic but clean the neat thing was there were screened in porches to the entrance each cabin. If you want to enjoy sometime away and see some beautiful things that time has not changed this is the place to go!! The people that I met there for Sure made the trip even more memorable. This is a great place for the true Spirited traveler!!!

“Could Be Fabulous”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

It you enjoy historic settings for restaurants that have catered to famous people, stop here and take a tour.
But if you want excellent food and excellent service this establishment of cabins and restaurant will not suit you. My father took us there because it once had a good reputation but it has not kept up with the times.
The seafood was mediocre at best and the wait staff could care less.
Be sure to douse yourself with mosquito repellant before exiting your car or better yet don't bother getting out.

“Experience Old Florida here.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

The Rod and Gun Club take you back in time about 100 years to old Florida. In those days I probably wouldn't have been admitted as it was a gathering place of the monied elite. Today it is a bed and breakfast. The hardwood floors and paneled walls and ceiling create a dark, cool atmosphere and reminding me of a men's smoking parlor. We took in the sights and toured the building before settling into a table for lunch. We both opted for a blackened grouper sandwich that was to die for! I must say that some of the servers are surly, but our young lady was wonderful. The patio is all screened in with a great view of the canal. Overall, we had great food, setting and service.

“Beyond laid-back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

My sister and niece came over from Ireland around Easter. So after driving them along the Loop Road, in Big Cypress Swamp to see some gators and wading birds, we thought we'd show them a real slice of Old Florida. We got to the Rod & Gun Club early afternoon, but after the lunchtime peak. We seated ourselves on the porch (as directed by a sign at the entrance to the restaurant) and enjoyed the view of the river, and the cool breeze as we waited....and waited....and waited. We saw the five occupied tables dwindle to three, and by our count there were at least four waitresses in attendance. Never mind getting a glass of water or a menu, we couldn't even get eye contact! After around fifteen to twenty minutes we'd had as much "atmosphere" as we could handle, and headed over to the Seafood Depot, which was wonderful. If you have to eat at the Rod & Gun Club, bring a sandwich.

“Gives you a sense of days gone by”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Charming place with lots of history. If you love antiques, this place is full of them. We ate lunch here 2 times while staying at Marco Island. Fish and crab cakes were delicious.
