“Ten Thousand Islands Boat Tour is tops”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This tour runs from the Everglades National Park HQ in Everglades City. The boat takes visitors out through a channel to the edge of the Gulf and if you are lucky, you will see all manner of birds, dolphins and manatees. The best time is the sunset tour on a good day. It's well worth the price and the guides are usually very knowledgeable about the area and the natural history of that part of Florida. There are many good captains, but we remember Captain Marty as having a real sense of humor and a lot of information.

“Mangrove Wilderness Boat Tour ( Everglades NP - Gulf Coast)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

This is not an air boat tour. Air boat tours are not allowed within the national park. This was a small, single engine boat. We made the reservations online more than week before the tour day. We wanted to do the first tour of the day so went for the 9.00am tour.

When we got there, we found only we had booked the 9.00am tour. We were worried whether they would wait till the boat fills up. But they didn't. Our boat Captain Marty started the tour on time. So we two ended up enjoying a private tour for ordinary price.

Captain Marty explained us a lot about the areas' history, park's history. There were lots of birds of different kinds and Captain Marty helped us identifying them. We learned a lot about those birds from him. The best part of the tour was the stretch he took us through a dense mangrove forest. The path was barely wide enough for a small boat and the mangrove canopy was right above our heads. We saw a few alligators and lots of birds there. On our way back, we slowed down to look at the shell mounds built by native Americans. We saw a couple of dolphins swimming near out boat.

The water is brackish and not clear. The chance of seeing anything under water is slim though the depth is 4 feet on average. The boats cannot get too close to the islands because of the shallow depths. Taking a binoculars with you is a good idea so that you can enjoy up close vies of the birds.

The tour lasted 1.45 hours and we enjoyed the every bit of it. This is not the kind of tour for thrill seekers. But if you like birds, nature this is ideal.

We did this one week before the so called season begins hence we didn't experience any booking conflicts. However, during peak times there can be double booking situations. Call them couple of days before the tour or allow a few extra hours in your schedule if you plan to do this during peak times.

“Excellent - Mangrove tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We took the mangrove tour in mid-November, and our captain was Marty. He was very knowledgeable about the birds, the mangroves, and any other question we asked him about the surroundings. The booking for the tour went flawless, and it was only the two of us for the morning tour, so it felt very private. We saw a lot of birds, a few alligators in the mangroves, two dolphins near the boat, and the islands that were constructed with shells. I learned a lot during this trip, and the scenery was breathtaking. It was chilly, so I am glad we wore jackets. Everything went so perfectly for us, we would do it again.

“Better book with another company!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

We went to this place on our Tour through Florida. We arrived late (2pm), but we absolutely wanted to do a nice canoe tour on that day. So we booked with this company. The lady at the counter told us that she has to take my credit card number in case we return the boat broken. OK with that...

We went out to see the mangroves at the 10.000 Islands. It's a great landscape, we had a lot of fun, even seen a view animals. When we tried to get back to the mainland we had problems with the waves, the wind and the tide. We struggled for about 2,5 hours, but didn't get far. Thats when the Park Rangers saved us the first time... Two Rangers picked us up with a motor boat and returned us to the mainland. The rangers witnessed, that we brought back the canoe undamaged. Eventually the rental office was already closed, so we had no chance to talk to anyone of the company anymore, so we wrote them a note.

So, when we got back from our holidays a week later, I recognized, that they charged me 575 US$ for a broken boat! OK... We wrote a first email to them, if there maybe was a mistake. No answer. We wrote a second email - no answer. Third email - no answer... After that I wrote a message to the National Park Service, informing them about the matter. They quickly reacted and Park Superintendant himself wrote a letter to the company. That's when the NPS saved us the second time. After another week I got the first response from the rental guys, telling me, that they needed my credit card information (again - despite, that they have had it for a month...) with no single word of an excuse. After one month they finally managed to refund the money to my credit card. I don't think they would have ever reacted if it weren't for the NPS.

So my advice: Better book your canoe trips for this wonderful place with another company!

“Don't book with these people”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We went on the 1000 Island tour which was ok - but less than the 1.5 hours advertised and then booked to go the next day on the Mangrove tour. When we returned, they told us that in fact our pre-booked tour was double booked. We could go two hours later. That wouldn't work for us as we were heading for the airport. My 7 year old was devastated. The server then said she would see if she could "make an exception" and give us a refund!!! she did eventually. But the most galling thing was that there was NOT ONE WORD OF APOLOGY. We went to the National Park rides because we thought they would be less commercial. Go to the businesses. They want your trade.
