I've been going to this restaurant since it opened usually with family members (locals) and always enjoyed good meals and pleasant experiences. The last visit has changed my opinion significantly - to the point where we won't dine there again. Two of us went for lunch and the meal was fine. My dining partner (who picked up the check) speaks with a slight European accent. Upon later examination, we discovered that Luna Rossa had ADDED AN 18% gratuity for our party of two which had not initially been noticed! In our distraction upon leaving, my dining partner had also left a 20 percent tip, not realizing the 18 percent was in there - so they got off with a significant "gratuity." Since this shopping mall does have lots of foreign visitors who may not be familiar with the tipping system here in the U.S. I can understand there may be occasions where waitstaff may not receive an appropriate gratuity. However, a simple small placard on the table or menu (in foreign languages) gently reminding diners that tips are not included would suffice. To blatantly target "foreign sounding" guests and slap an 18 percent gratuity on their check is appalling. This has NEVER happened over all the years when us "locals" were picking up the check - even with larger parties. We will no longer visit this restaurant and let others know that in our opinion, Luna Rossa staff is ripping off foreign tourists - who are a big part of the lifeblood of this economically challenged community. Shame on Luna Rossa staff for biting the hands that are feeding Southwest Florida! There are other restaurants in the mall who would certainly appreciate the business without this kind of nonsense happening.
