We spent January and February there in 2008 and we are returning for most of the winter in 2010. Island House On The Beach is aptly named. It is practically right on the beach - no streets to cross - the beach is literally steps away from the house. So if being on the beach is your lthing, you can't ask for a better location. The beach itself (Englewood Beach and connecting Stump Pass Beach) is nice - sandy, well-maintained, and stretches for miles along Manasota Key. Very few people on the beach in January; in February it started to pick up. In addition to lounging / reading or taking long walks on the beach, we like to search for sea shells and there are lots of them to be found..From your window in the apartment, you can see and hear the waves coming in which was very nice, .especially as you wake up to the gentle sound in the morning. The accomodations at Island House are good - not ritzy, but clean and comfortable. The proprietors, Ada and Ito Desouza, are very congenial and made us feel very welcome. They went out of their way to help us a couple of times. Manasota Key has two good restaurants, a convenience store, and a couple of beach supplies shops. The adjoining town of Englewood has more restaurants, supermarkets, banks, and most everything else you might need. There are other nearby towns that we enjoyed while at Island House - Venice and Punta Gorda are definitely worth visits. We are told that the Gulf Coast, especially around small towns like Englewood, is quieter than the Atlantic side. This is fine with us. We'll take relaxation over hustle and bustle most of the time. That's why we go to Florida.
