Athens Family Restaurant has been a staple business in Edgewater, FL for years. Located on US Highway 1 in a small strip mall it is easy to miss, but you will be back after you find it.
Our two favorites are the Gyro sandwich and the Pasticcio dinner. The sandwich is composed of a prepared herbed meat compound of beef and lamb that is heated on a vertical rotisserie and then layered with onion, tomatoes, sadziki sauce wrapped in a fresh pita bread. The owner delivers the concoction wrapped in wax paper that she delicately tears to expose the succulent dish in perfect fist holding size. This is delicious and only $5.50 leaving you with a few dollars for some baklava, also made in-house.
The Pasticcio is composed of ground beef sauté with herbs and spices blended with macaroni and baked with a cream topping, served with a light tomato sauce. This dish is accompanied with Greek bread, butter and a small salad. You will want seconds, and probably can afford it since the whole dinner is only $9.75.
The wife runs the front of the house with her husband, Gus, handling the cooking skills. She speaks English and Gus does a passable job of greeting guests with a wave through the window exposing the busy kitchen.
This is not fancy, but it is really good. Christmas decorations go up in November and sometimes come down by Easter. You can also get some great loafs of Greek bread the weeks before Christmas and Easter.
