“Great family vacation...but, room for improvement.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Our family visited Hawks Cay last week for Spring Break. If you ask our kids (ages 8 and 9) how it was, they would say, "The best week EVER!" However, I do not think it is a place that we will return. Upon checking in our Villa Monday night, we were disappointed to see how run down it was (peeling paint, dirty bathrooms, broken blinds in the bedroom so we had to hang towels over windows, cable wires hanging off walls, no bureau in bedroom so no place to unpack...). The kind lady at the front desk gave us 3 other places to tour and none were even as nice as our first so we had to stay where we were. The location was awesome and we adored the daily visits from the manatees outside our place. However, we also weren't very impressed with the food. We ate at Ocean 3 meals and every time the buffet seemed to be mediocre. The Grill was closed 3 nights we were there for private parties, so we never got to eat there. We did not try Alma. The staff at Hawks Cay were accommodating, but not overly helpful (ex:had to call daily for trash pick up). The pool area seemed to be littered with cups and food quite often and the water pooling up around the pool deck by the end of the day was a little yucky and hazardous.

On a fabulous note, probably the best part of our experience was at the Indies Club for Kids. The hourly activities and awesome sports complex led to many fun hours of sports fun for my son, especially. The staff at the Indies Club was wonderful! They were organized and fair and made the kids feel welcome. My husband enjoyed the sports activities as much as the kids. :)

We did the Dolphin swim off campus because it offered a little more for your money and we rented a boat from the marina one day to go explore and snorkel. That was a wonderful day!

Overall we had a great trip. For the money we paid per night and for meals (over $600 per night for villa), we simply expected a lot more. I think because many of the accommodations are privately owned, there is a wide range of nicety.

We live in a small coastal town and all of our friends are asking if we recommend they go there. I can't in good faith say, "YES!" because it wasn't a great value. For a reduced price, absolutely!

Hope this was helpful!

Thank you for sharing your experiences at our resort. Your kind comments about our staff members are appreciated and we will be sharing your review with them. Clean, friendly & other throughout the day.
& I never write reviews, hence this note.
After a long and busy day...
I was not only welcomed by anybody.
Someone who woke up behind the desk said only place I could find a glass of sparkling water was to walk out some door.
Towards a fire pit.
Hah.
&...
Rudest & worse service I ever experienced in my life in travels.
The person tending their bar today 4/30.
This grinning "bar tender" told me, while inappropriate tending to a lovely young lady, once he was done "entertaining" the only other guest.
That the bar was closed.
No water!
Granted this was 10:15pm.
It took me @ least 20 minutes to get his attention & distract him from a pretty guest that has clearly had enough of him.
Anyway.
Rude.
Nice place.
Comfortable beds.
Priced right.
Nevertheless,
Will not be back,
I think that a place of this caliber should consider more wisely who they employ @ there evening establishment.
Again..
Rudest experience in my life.

Though the location and facilities have all of the potential in the world, clearly management is not at the top of their game. Beautiful site with nice core offering for sure. When we arrived and checked in, the shower curtain was shredded, the main floor bath light switch broken and the Wifi dead. three nights stay later and they promised Wifi (A key for my booking) never did get fixed. The room service hung up a wet towel my wife put on the floor on the towel rack. It took until the final day for the light to get fixed. The so-called "Tranquility zone" pool for adults was filled with kids much of the weekend. What a shame. This really could be a top resort. And there were moments of great service. But perhaps the first night's trip to the Tiki Bar says it all here - when we got there, the bar's Wifi was dead. The two bartenders could not put in food orders nor run tabs on the computer system. All moved slow and the bartenders mostly griped for all to hear that the system is broken, sucks, etc. No smiles to be found. The joy had to be brought with you, as the Hawks Cay staff was not going to bring that special feeling. What a shame. This is NOT on my list for a return - the cost far, far outweighs the value.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

We've stayed aboard our boat at Hawks Cay marina many times over the past 12 years. We generally stay for a month or more.
The atmosphere is very pleasant and staff are very helpful.
It's more expensive than marinas in Marathon but less expensive than Key West, and no other marina in the Keys has the on-site relaxation & recreational options of Hawks Cay, including restaurants, pools, fishing, snorkeling charters, etc.
It's a family-friendly resort, and our granddaughters love visiting there.

Went to visit here for a few days on a corporate retreat. From arrival to leaving I can only say the very best things. Our room was beautiful, well stocked, comfortable to hang out in and the beds are wonderful. All of the restaurants had fantastic food and service...ambiance was just superb. We enjoyed both the pool and some of the onsite water activity rentals and had the best time. The spa area is so relaxing, all of the services we were treated to very much enjoyed, the facility is beautiful. Every person that we encountered during our stay was very helpful and polite. I would love the opportunity to go back and visit again and take my family. The firepit at night was a really cool feature!!

I went with my three children (12 y.o. twin girls and 8 y.o. boy). We stayed in a villa on the harbor and it was beautiful and relaxing. Not the fanciest villa but perfectly fine. There are lots of families with young kids and we could fish outside all day which my kids loved. There were spontaneous pick up football games among the boys and Manatees swam into the harbor every day. The grounds are beautiful and people are friendly so you meet a lot of other families with young kids. It is definitely a family resort. There is also a kids club which my son loved and where he met lots of other kids to swim with and play basketball and volleyball and soccer. We paid extra for daily cleaning so the villa stayed nice. Also, at nighttime there is live music and a fire by the pool and it is a really fun time to hang out with your family. Even just walking over to the marina every day with my kids for ice cream and playing with the puppy in the dive shop was lovely.

However, the water sports were very costly and not so great. The pools are crowded. The deep sea fishing was very expensive but very high quality - a great experience and we were then able to barbeque the fish at the marina. The dolphin program at the resort is not so great - we went to one in Key Largo which was much better. The worst water experience was the snuba trip - it was fine for my husband and I because we are certified scuba divers but for the children it was too difficult and not fun. Also, the restaurants at the resort are just mediocre - it is far better to drive to Marathon to find something there.

Room Tip: As for where to stay - I would definitely chose a villa in the marina, harbor or beach. The hotel r...

This is a great resort for families. If you are looking to have a peaceful getaway for just the two of you, you might be disappointed. We stayed there the week after Easter and that may have been the problem. There is a beautiful outdoor fireplace/firepit that would have been a great place to unwind at the end of the day. No such luck, it was overrun by screaming kids. There was an adult pool, so that is where we spent most of our time.
Our vacation did not start out well. When we checked in we were assigned a handicap-assessible room. We immediately asked to change. We were supposed to have an island view. Yes I had a view of the island parking lot.
Good things about the resort: Location, midway down the Keys. Great fish tacos at beach bar.
I was disappointed overall and I would not go back
