Our family visited Hawks Cay last week for Spring Break. If you ask our kids (ages 8 and 9) how it was, they would say, "The best week EVER!" However, I do not think it is a place that we will return. Upon checking in our Villa Monday night, we were disappointed to see how run down it was (peeling paint, dirty bathrooms, broken blinds in the bedroom so we had to hang towels over windows, cable wires hanging off walls, no bureau in bedroom so no place to unpack...). The kind lady at the front desk gave us 3 other places to tour and none were even as nice as our first so we had to stay where we were. The location was awesome and we adored the daily visits from the manatees outside our place. However, we also weren't very impressed with the food. We ate at Ocean 3 meals and every time the buffet seemed to be mediocre. The Grill was closed 3 nights we were there for private parties, so we never got to eat there. We did not try Alma. The staff at Hawks Cay were accommodating, but not overly helpful (ex:had to call daily for trash pick up). The pool area seemed to be littered with cups and food quite often and the water pooling up around the pool deck by the end of the day was a little yucky and hazardous.
On a fabulous note, probably the best part of our experience was at the Indies Club for Kids. The hourly activities and awesome sports complex led to many fun hours of sports fun for my son, especially. The staff at the Indies Club was wonderful! They were organized and fair and made the kids feel welcome. My husband enjoyed the sports activities as much as the kids. :)
We did the Dolphin swim off campus because it offered a little more for your money and we rented a boat from the marina one day to go explore and snorkel. That was a wonderful day!
Overall we had a great trip. For the money we paid per night and for meals (over $600 per night for villa), we simply expected a lot more. I think because many of the accommodations are privately owned, there is a wide range of nicety.
We live in a small coastal town and all of our friends are asking if we recommend they go there. I can't in good faith say, "YES!" because it wasn't a great value. For a reduced price, absolutely!
Hope this was helpful!
