“Loved Hawks Cay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

We stayed in a standard room and it was fabulous. Everything about the resort was upscale. The bathrooms were beautiful with bathrobes for the adults. The beds were comfortable and the views were spectacular. Food at the resort was very pricey, so a villa would have been more economical, but we were on vacation.... Can't wait to go back for our next vacation!

Room Tip: There were only three of us (2 adults, 1 child), so the room was fine, but eating was very expensive...

We stayed for five nights in one of the Hawks Cay Resort's 'harbour villas', (other villa areas include: 'Sunset' and 'Marine'. We were close to the Indies Club.

On the plus side:
Our villa was well-equipped with really comfortable beds and it was very clean upon our arrival. It was big enough for us, (two adults, two teens). The aircon worked well. The beds were extremely comfortable.
I really liked the two verandahs at the back of the property - even though we didn't have a view, (blocked by trees for privacy), it was lovely to sit out there
There are some lovely views to be found around the resort.
Staff were pleasant.
Free Internet use at the hotel was a nice touch.
Nobody hassled you around the pool areas - there were towels available for use and you could get bar service from the poolside in the main pool and the Tranquility Pool but it wasn't intrusive.

On the downside:
The first thing that met us upon arrival at our accommodation was a really strong smell of paint and we found large tubs of paint and dustsheets next to the washer/dryer and more paint in a cupboard with the boiler. All the painted surfaces in our villa were only undercoated which led us to believe that the property was in the middle of some maintenance. When I rang to complain, someone removed the paint and sheets next to the washer but refused to move the paint under the stairs next to the boiler saying 'that's where we keep it'.

Elsewhere in the 'harbor villa' we found odd signs of poor maintenance - there were numerous switches in the property that didn't switch anything on and half the lamps in the house didn't work which gave the place an unintentioned romantic dimness. There had been a fan on the top verandah outside our room at some point, (next door still had a fan and we still had a switch for it), but ours had been removed for some reason. The bedrooms were also very dark due to a lack of overhead lighting.

There were no safety deposit boxes - you had to go over to the main hotel if you wanted to use a box there.

Once outside the property, the pool at the Indies Club was good for little kids, but the one time I used it I picked up a minor ear infection.

We couldn't get seated around the main pool due to over-crowding so I tried the Tranquility Pool by myself. This was lovely apart from the fact that iguanas and seagulls were drinking from the pool and gulls were openly paddling on the swim ledges in the pool itself. This really didn't seem hygenic to me, (and I couldn't smell any obvious chlorination of the water), so, although I liked the iguanas, I vacated the pool pretty promptly.

Other points:
We tried Alma's for dinner one night and weren't particularly impressed - I had the macaroni cheese as it was the only veggie option and couldn't eat more than a few bites as it was so stodgy. Although the rest of the party didn't mind their meat options, we felt it was over-priced. We also tried Tom's Harbor House but found the food there quite unpleasant - basically we should have just stuck to self-catering. We had more luck with the Beach Grill one lunchtime where we had reasonable food in a pretty location.

The staff were pleasant and Hawks Cay Resort is certainly a beautiful place, but I would agree with those who have said it looks a lot more impressive on the website. There really wasn't a lot there, once you'd gone beyond the pools and it was hard to find a place to sit by those. The charter boats available at the marina were horribly expensive so apart from sunbathing/swimming there wasn't much to do - even the hotel shopping was very limited.

We quite enjoyed ourselves, but wouldn't return - for the price I expected more.

Stayed here for 1 night on the way from Miami to Key West and really liked the resort. Modern resort with all the facilities that you'd want, two pools, hot tubs, starbucks, a number of bars, etc.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and I was really impressed with the daily schedule of events for children starting at around 10:00 and running right through into the evening (don't have children but if I did this would be a real benefit)

I'd definitely go back to this resort

Just got back from a weeks stay at Hawks Cay in one of the Villa's in Harbour Village, I was with my 2 x teenage kids 16 & 13 plus my wife. On the whole we found the whole we found the resort very nice, all the grounds are well kept and the villa itself was very clean. Our Villa was very spacious and comfortable only problem being was they did not have a kettle only coffee making machine (not good if you come from the UK and enjoy your tea). As we were there a week, the best and cheapest place to buy your groceries is in Marathon as the on site shop is very expensive.
The days we stayed on site we went up to the main pool next to the Lagoon, no problems getting a bed and there were plenty of towels which we could change during the day. One issue you will have around this pool is all the drinking and eating that goes on with guests standing in the pool. The rules did state no eating or drinking while in the pool however this was totally over looked and all the waiters served people and brought drinks etc.to them while in the pool, which I thought with all the young kids around to be very un-hygienic. The restaurants are very expensive and the quality not up to the prices you pay, especially Alma's. We went onto trip advisor and found Hideaway Cafe 2 minutes down the road and Sunset Grill at the end of Marathon on the left just before the 7 mile bridge, both restaurants are a great experience.
My kids wanted to have an experience with Dolphins and they done this at the Dolphin Research Centre down the road, they were trainers for the day and although expensive it was worth every penny of their 7 hour experience. The one on site we felt was expensive plus only covered a short period of time compared to DRC.
If I had to make a final couple of observations I would say that firstly, the resort fee says that it should include all tips however when I booked a jet ski experience $150 for one hour it was made very clear to me by the guy who took me out expected a tip (on top of the $150) !
Lastly 80% of the staff around the resort are all very friendly and happy always saying hello and ensuring you are well looked after but the other 20% can ruin all the hard work and effort of the others (they should respect the prices the guests pay and treat all guests / customers to the kind of experience they expect in a 4* resort)..

Room Tip: Our Villa in Harbour Village was very excellent

I have stayed twice in Hacks Cay Resort both times in the Lani Rooms.
They have these Lani rooms that have their own patios and a few steps away is the pool. They gave two pool family and the adults serenity pool. They have a lagoon and you can swim with the dolphins(for a fee) or just watch them swim around. I really enjoyed my stay here. The service is good and the resort is great! The morning buffet breakfast is yummy. The restaurant is a bit pricy and loud but you are so close to the next key that you can drive somewhere else for dinner. I highly recommend it here.

Room Tip: the lani on the first floor with patio to the pool

You have to get over the fact that it is going to cost you to enjoy this place. They charge you $29 per day disguised as a resort fee which basically gives you wifi and valet parking & not much else. They also add 18% service to everything automatically which for anyone from the UK is an Alien concept as we tend to relate service charge to the level of service actually received. Once you get over the fact that this is going to be expensive and you're being ripped off you can start to enjoy what is actually a beautiful resort with amazing facilities, wonderful pools and a lovely location. Our visit was impacted by hurricane Isaac and the hotel had to be evacuated but we enjoyed our stay and ate in Toms Harbor Cafe which was very nice and slightly cheaper than the hotel restaurant. Lunches in the beach grill were excellent. We hired kayaks and the water sport staff were very friendly and helpful. Good water sport facilities but again, at a price!

Hawks Cay offers many amenities for people who love resort vacations. Several pools, a lagoon, on site restaurants, tennis, fitness center and spa. We stayed in the hotel portion but there are also Villas (houses). The customer service was great, everyone was polite and accommodating without hovering. Issues (minor) were handled immediately and to our satisfaction. We took our boat with plans to dive and fish. The location is nicely situated for both activities. The ramp is nice, easy in and out and the ramp/marina assistants were very nice. Recommend highly or those who like resort vacations and utilize the amenities provided. Found the on site restaurants very pricey, but most places in The Keys are.
