“Great food, beautiful location - a very relaxing honeymoon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at Hawks Cay and had a wonderful time! The resort has SO many restaurant and activities options that you really don't have to go off-property unless you just want to explore the other islands.

Food: I will say that the menus at each of the restaurants don't have a TON of options (Tom's has the most variety, I'd say), but everything we ate was yummy, and there are different styles of restaurants to choose from, so we didn't mind. Tom's Harbor House is a fun casual dining restaurant on the marina with a great happy hour (35 cent conch fritters, 65 cent wings, $2 Bud Lights) from 4-6 every day. Also on the marina is Emack and Bolio's, a little ice cream shop that's so good, we went there three times during our stay. For breakfast at the resort, I'd skip the coffee bar and recommend dining at the Terrace - it's your standard breakfast fare, but it's yummy and you can eat on the patio. The hotel also has an order-ahead, in-room breakfast option that we took advantage of on our final day - all of the room service dining is delicious. And if you're in the mood for fine dining, Alma is fabulous. I had the freshest, yummiest scallops there for dinner, and my husband had the wagyu steak. Can you tell we enjoyed the food? My husband and I love and appreciate good food, and we were not disappointed at Hawks Cay.

Activities: The highlight of our trip was definitely the Dolphin Connection. We considered it a splurge to sign up for the Dolphin Discovery program ($165/person), but it was well worth it for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with the dolphins! The trainers were so nice, patient and knowledgeable. All five dolphins were either born at the facility or retired from other places. They were so playful and fun. We didn't want our time with them to end!

Beach/Pools: I guess this is probably our fault for not realizing this ahead of time, but we were surprised that the Keys doesn't really have any beaches. Yes, you're on an island, and there's water all around, but the "beach" is just rocks and trees - definitely not a Caribbean-style beach. But at the resort, we still enjoyed laying out by the saltwater lagoon (although in January, the water was a bit too cold to swim in) and the Tranquility Pool (the adults-only pool). We never made it to the Sunset Pool in Sunset Village, but there is one other pool, the main family pool. Since we didn't have kids with us, we preferred the adult pool and had a great time laying out and swimming there.

Honeymoon: I mentioned when booking the hotel that we were going to be on our honeymoon, and they must have made a note of it in the computer because everywhere we went, someone on staff was saying, "Oh, you're on your honeymoon! Congratulations!" It made us feel really special. Everyone on staff was so nice and helpful, and the front desk team even sent us a bottle of wine to our room!

Downside: Slow service in the restaurants. Although everyone was extremely nice, my husband and I joked that everyone there was on "island time" because the service wasn't as fast and attentive as we were used to. Sometimes we would sit down at a restaurant and it would take 5-10 minutes before anyone would come up to take our order. The waiters at Beach Grill also service the family and adult pools and the saltwater lagoon, and while some of the older guests were ordering drinks and having them delivered to them by the pool, we didn't have anyone at the pool come to take our order until the second-to-last day. We thought that maybe because we were younger (the majority of the guests are either families or older couples), they didn't pay as much attention to us. It was a small flaw in an otherwise wonderful week, though.

Overall, we had an extremely relaxing and enjoyable trip, and we would like to visit again when we have kids. There are seemingly endless options of activities for children and families that I could tell this was a very family-friendly place. We would like to take a sunset cruise or charter a boat from the marina next time, too - I think that is probably the best way to enjoy the Keys.

Room Tip: Couples - ask for a room overlooking the Tranquility Pool (adults-only pool). It's a little quie...

Staff & property were awesome...Where our tranquil getaway went died was the mgt not addressing the contractor's portable generator that ran all week Terrace restaurant & Poolside from 10AM til 4PM. Asked prior to our arrival if we need to be concerned about construction & were told that it was not a problem. We actually feel sorry for the pool & service staff has probably seen a dramatic drop in revenue. Still at the property/like many avoiding the noise as best as possible. Will post again..Good< Bad<Ugly

Just got back from a quick get away at Hawks Cay Resort with the family. The 3 bedroom 3 bath villas are amazing with great views. Fully equipped. Great activities for kids and adults alike. Can totally relaxed while kids have a great time. Have to try the Pina Coladas with Dark Rum!!! Can't wait to back. If you are coming from the North to get away from the cold, this place in a no brainier, look into it!!!!

Hawks Cay Resort was a heavenly oasis in a sea of mediocrity in the Florida Keys. We were a family of four on a family vacation, and we were surprised at the wide variety of choices and experiences for our family without the feeling of a big resort. From the kids club to the marina where we could rent fishing poles or hire a charter boat, to the dolphin discovery and lagoon with rental kayaks and paddle boards, there was never a dull moment while also having a feeling of expansiveness rarely found in a typical resort experience. Highly recommend Hawks Cay to families and couples alike, especially since there is a separate large pool specifically for adults only ;)

Given the lack of choice and excellent image this place projects online we decided to stay here on our way to FLL from Key West. Let me first give credit to HCR for branding themselves wonderfully, I even heard an ad on the parking shuttle's radio back in PHL. Originally when researching for our trip to the keys I had looked into this place pretty seriously, they have an awesome "Hero's Discount" for anyone in the medical field. After pulling the trigger on Key West (Southernmost on the Beach was awesome!) My verdict for HCR: I would have cried if I had booked for more than one ($300) night. This place reminded me of a crappy all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic. Sure it has a bar (lame, but the best pina-colada I've had. Ever) two pools (very small and very dated) a salt water rec pond and some dolphins (very depressing) an overpriced restaurant with 3 entrees that isn't open on Sunday, some tennis courts, access to the amenities a small nearby marina offers and that's all folks, nothing else. If you don't like eating next to rough fisherman at the nearby shacks, you are stuck eating here. Key Largo has more to offer and Key West is Paris by comparison. That said, it’s a pleasant place, great if you have kids and you can relax, they aren't going anywhere. If it had a beach, I would give it a very good because the bathroom was spacious, as was the room and the balcony. The bed was comfortable, and everything inside was clean, it's what they have going for them. Outside, not so much. The grounds are made beautiful by the weather, but they leave much to be desired in the way of luxury. Think Honda Civic. Won't go back. If like us, you just need a clean room, Holiday Inn Express ($169) If you need to stop somewhere and have kids, it’s perfect, but don’t stay long if you have the option of going to Key West or Key Largo.

This resort is among the nicest I have ever visited. Every decorative touch is impressive, with such attention to detail that the hotel appears like an upscale art gallery. There is so much to see and do here, but most of all, it is a place to relax and soak everything in. It is isolated but perfect. The pools are gorgeous. The lagoon is great. The hot tubs are terrific, especially at night. The fire pit by the main pool superb. The rooms are exquisite, with beautiful mahogany furniture. All rooms have balconies that look out on the beautiful grounds or the water. The cleanliness is perfect. The room smelled terrific. The very large bathroom is a wonderful experience, particularly the shower and the bath products. The beds are comfortable. I have no complaints and recommend this hotel very much to anyone looking to get away from it all and enjoy a wonderful hotel where they feel completely pampered. The staff was a joy to deal with and extremely responsive. The resort grounds are beautiful, and the trolley to take guests around the island was very helpful. The gym is good, as well. It is also very romantic. I would love return here soon. Thank you, Hawks Cay!!

Room Tip: We stayed in a Lanai room....it was great, two level deck and right on the traquility pool!
