Had heard all about AJ's from asking the locals where to go for seafood in general and more specifically shrimp. Read some of the reviews and thought that this would be THE place to bring three teenagers who adore seafood. Wrong! We should have left when we had trouble finding the actual building. We went in and waited while the hostess finished folding towels. We were shown to our table. Our waitress decided to appear about 10 minutes later. You could tell that she didn't want to be our waitress. Attitude galore. The lunch menu did not have the royal red shrimp on it. When I asked, I told told rudely "we don't have them.". Well, we placed our orders. Our food arrived--lukewarm and not very appealing looking. Because we had to be some place in less than 30 minutes, we ate the food. One of the teenaged girls had clam strips-she said that they didn't taste right and didn't finish. Another one of the teenaged girls had shrimp and they were mediocre at best. The hamburger server to my daughter was dry. My meal was not what I expected either. The other two teenagers said that their food was "OK". These are not picky teenagers. They try everything offered them and make up their own minds on whether they like it or not. We were in town for a dance competition and this was supposed to be a special lunch for them. I was embarrassed having suggested eating here. We all left hungry.
Getting our bill was also tricky. Since our waitress didn't check back frequently, we had to wait to get our bill. The teenagers went to the car leaving my daughter and me to settle up the tab. She finally did appear and after another wait, our bill was presented. We paid and left. NO "thanks for stopping in" or similar statement was offered by the people at the hostess podium.
I realize this is a tourist town and not everyone likes tourists. But, if you are going into the hospitality business in a tourist town, make sure that tourists are made feel welcome. Another party was seated next to us. They must be frequent visitors because they were greeted by several staff members including our server. One of the women felt that we were infringing on her "space" so I moved our table to the left to give her more room. She backed her chair up again and wouldn't give my daughter room to move. We didn't say anything because they were "staff favorites". I noticed staff members talking to them every time they walked by. We were not made felt welcome at all. Their food arrive much quicker than ours did.
Bottom line: This is not a place I would recommend based on today's mediocre food and lackluster service.
