My wife and I had a very nice date at the Ocean Club about 15 years ago. Unfortunately, nothing (decor, menu, music) has been updated since.
We had a large party for a Father's Day celebration with my wife's family with 12 at our table. I know that large parties make things more difficult.
First the ambiance: Nothing has changed since this place opened 20 years ago. It was nice then; it is nothing but dated now. it needs to be painted and cleaned if not gutted. The was a gentleman singing and playing guitar & keyboard with the typical synthized back-up. He was actually pretty talented, but the music matched the room; tired. Mostly schmaltzy love songs from the 80's and 90's. The crowd responded and danced; however.
Now the food: Again, nothing has changed in 20 years. The menu is tired and my dish was tired. I had grilled grouper "Ocean Club" which was about a 4 ounce piece of fish that had been cooked earlier in the day, two rubbery shrimp, a few shreds of crabmeat, a quarter cup of cold rice and 3 asparagus spears (3, really?). All this bounty for only $30. A decent wedge salad was another $6 (although without bacon).
To be fair, my wife and son enjoyed their crab cakes and my other son (who will not touch seafood) did a decent job on the pan roasted chicken. My brother-in-law had a steak that he said was cold. He did not send it back because that would have prolonged the agony of listening to the music.
At least the service charge was not added to a large party. The service was actually very good for a large party. The waitperson was prompt and anticipated our needs well. She could not overcome the overall dated experience. There are many better options in the Destin area.
