“This Place Rocks! Great fraternity party throw-down location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2009

This is the only place that my fraternity ever stayed at that invited us back, and not only did they invite us back but did it year after year. They catered to us as though this was our place, and it was while we were there.

The security guard, Frosty, made sure everyone had a great time and the police stayed away. They allowed us to build a stage on the beach and have bands play all day and in to the night. There was no one else staying while we were there, so we could do what ever we wanted.

This place is not nice in any way, except for the wonderful service provided to a group of people that should never be allowed to stay anywhere. I highly reccomend this place for anyone that falls in to this category.

This place is horrible! They made NO repairs after Hurricane Ivan several years ago. You will probably get an infection from the mold so stay away! They didn't even bother to replace the stairs on the boardwalk to the beach. Sandbags were stacked up against our doors. We turned it over to the BBB. Please do the same if you want anything done about places like this!!

We did not go to Fort Walton for a luxury hotel stay. We went for the awesome white beaches.... more family oriented and less populated than other nearby commercial beaches. What we found at the Sandman was exactly what we went for.

Now about the hotel suites themselves. We got a 3rd floor balcony suite. The suite is NOTHING FANCY at all. It had the feel of being at a "camp". The back door didn't close properly. The floors were a dark outdoor/indoor carpet that were stained. There was a nice closet in the bedroom with 2 full/queen beds and a nice size dresser with lots of space. The living room had a table and sofa sleeper. The bathroom door didn't close properly.

The PRICE is what drove us to it. We were told on the phone it would be $149 a night but since we were only staying one night, he'd knock off $20. So we got our room for $129. There is nothing anywhere along the coast RIGHT on the sand in that price range that we were able to find. Everything else was closer to $200+. WHAT WE LOVED THE MOST was that there was NO one else on the beach ( directly in front of the hotel) during our stay. We felt like we had our whole own area of beach all to ourselves. So much nicer than we had thought we would get. We did not want to leave. The beach is awesome. Our 9 year old and 14 year old found 2 hermit crabs and brought them home as pets. = ) We are going to stay again in July! But this time we will stay for 2 nights. We will take advantage of the grill next to the pool this time.

Again, this is not a luxury hotel. It is an affordable way to go to the awesome white beach and have a place to shower and sleep when you aren't at the beach. (There was NO hot water- all cold!) = (

Oh yes, the cookware was in poor condition. The teflon was peeling off of the skillet and pots. Bring dishwashing soap, and I might even bring some spray bleach to give everything a good quick wipe down before we bring everything in.

Hope this helps!

This room isn't quite the world class place that some people look for; however, if you're on a budget and want to spend your money on better things, it's well worth the price. If you get one of the top floors your looking right at the gulf. I would stay here again.

  • Liked — Although it's not "beachfront", you're basically right there and looking at it from the top floor rooms
  • Disliked — no elevator, no microwave

This place is not as shown on their website. It's dirty, falling apart, not directly on the beach and we had no hot water and they didn't know when the maintenance man would be there. We arrived at 9pm so had to sleep there and then checked out first thing the next morning! I don't usually leave reviews and comments but this place was so bad.......

If you are looking for a great place to stay that will not take a bite out of your budget...This is it. The Sandman- Ft. Walton- is on Santa Rosa Blvd. They have a hotel but we always stay in the suites. With the suite, you get the usual bedroom/s, & bath plus, you get a kitchen with a stove and a living room with cable tv. There is also a sleeper sofa in the living room. But the best thing, I think, is that with the second and third floors, you balcony gives you a great view of the Gulf. Coffee on the balcony is Heaven. From your balcony you can watch- the fishing boats on the horizon, seagulls come right up to be fed, and the most beautiful sunsets God lets us enjoy. If you are looking for fancy, this ain't it. This is a good, clean, reasonable and comfortable place to sleep. WE LOVE THE SANDMAN. Next May will be our 16th year to return.

Listen people this place is not a place you want to stay. Dont be fooled by the pictures on thier internet site, the pictures make the rooms look great but they are not. Walls and floors were dirty, Sleeper sofa was smelly and very dirty. The dead bolt locks on the doors did not work from the outside so the only way to lock your room was by just using the door handle locks. Also not dead bolt lock on your front door facing the roadway. All of the residents that that I talked too were very unhappy with the rooms. And this is not hearsay, they do not offer refunds, so check out your rooms before you commit to a long term stay. Most of the residents are local construction workers working on hotels and motels around the area. There is no pool, not kids play area and not picnic area as they state on their web site either.
