When we arrived at the specified location, Capt. Jim was nowhere to be found. I called and spoke with him: he had forgotten about our excursion, even though we spoke two days before. My family and I drove another 30 or so minutes to where the boat was docked. When we got on board, we found that the boat was aging, but ok. We motored out of the inlet and found nothing but the heat. I won't complain about the heat or lack of wind, but when the motor overheated, I had reached my limit. We had spent less than an hour on the boat and I asked if we could go back. At the furthest point we reached away from the inlet we started from, we were never more than a half mile from where we started.

Honestly, I would like to thank you for giving us 2 out of 5 instead of 1 out of 5. It was just a terrible day. Everything went wrong that could have, including the oppressive heat.

To clarify, Captain Jim did not actually forget about the excursion. He was preparing to meet you and discovered that the motor was not running properly. In his attempt to correct the issue, he lost track of time and did not call to update you on the situation (something that he ABSOLUTELY should have done). He thought that the problem was corrected until, as you stated in your comment, the motor overheated. This was a frustrating for everyone

Captain Jim, runs this operation because he loves what he does. When he returned to the office after your failed excursion, his disappointment was evident. He knew that he had let you down and it weighed heavily on him. He takes these things very much to heart, we all do.

We completely understand why you wrote the review that you posted. However, please know that we will keep your information on file and if you come this way again, and are willing to let us, we would love to offer you another excursion on us. We truly hope that you will give us the chance to "make it right".

Sincerely and humbly,
The Calypso 2 team

“Not what it's depicted on website!! We only sailed the bay...no pretty gulf emerald coast”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

Captain Jim, may have been nice... But this was not worth the money...we were lead to believe it was going to be emerald waters to snorkel, and possibly swim with dolphins, but instead we just "sailed" the bay dark waters, that's it!! All that money for what was like a day on the lake back home in Georgia...I would not recommend spending even the half day rate.

We are very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your excursion. We make every effort to accommodate the requests of our clients. We only wish that you had made your concerns clear during the trip so that we could have discussed your alternative options. To be fair, perhaps we need to be more diligent in assessing the expectations of our guests prior to sailing. We will focus on doing a better job of this going forward. We are a very small operation and we pride ourselves on offering a very personalized experience tailored to our visitor’s requests.

As information for anyone considering booking, Captain Jim frequently sails in the bay unless requested to do otherwise. The main reason for this surrounds the comfort of the passengers. As the bay is more protected from high wind and tide, it generally makes for a much smoother and more enjoyable ride for our guests. Several pods (groups) of dolphins inhabit the bay and sightings are quite frequent. Captain Jim will also share local pirate history with you on this trip. The video located on our website was filmed in Choctawhatchee Bay and gives a good representation of what to expect from water conditions and clarity.

Alternatively, some guests prefer to sail into the Gulf to enjoy experiences such as "Crab Island" and snorkeling on the jetties. As you would expect, water clarity is higher but weather and water conditions tend to be more unpredictable. We are happy to accommodate either preference but please let us know when you make your reservation, so that we can arrange a launch point which will be most convenient to your preferred excursion.

Again, we are disappointed that we did not live up to your expectations, but we thank you for your feedback. We appreciate every opportunity to improve our operations and better serve our clients.

“This way a PERFECT way to propose to my girlfriend!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

We really enjoyed the sunset cruise aboard the Calypso 2 but it almost didnt happen a storm was coming through and it blew by at the last minute. Captain Jim was really knowledgable about the ocean and the actual history of Destin and the different things that has gone down in the last 15-20 years. The deck hand made an awesome crab and tuna dip!! The liquor drinks were alittle too strong but the deck hand was learning and I taught her a few things. But overall I would strongly suggest anyone wanting to do a sunset cruise go with Captain Jim and the Calypso 2, it was well worth it. Thanks again!!!!!
