A friend took me to Morikami and shared some insights into the gardens. There is meaning in everything in the gardens so at a minimum you should get the audio tour. If there is a docent tour, you should to that. The gardens should help you relax and release your mind for the time you are there. There is a spectacular bonsai garden, little waterfalls, the talking bamboo, just a few of the many distinct areas in the Japanese gardens. Definitely worth a couple hours of your time if you are anywhere in the area. Great gift shop. Sushi at the restaurant though I did not try it; we went instead to Ben's New York Kosher Deli which is nearby (I am neither from New York nor Jewish but this place was great!). There is an orchid place next to Morikami though we did not stop there.

Spent a day there on a business/pleasure trip in Fla.
Near Boca - hidden off the main road -

Their website is www.morikami.org

We were blown away by the layout and the beauty of the place.
It has a variety of Japanese gardens laid out in a large park area along with a small museum of Japanese art and surrounding
a lake filled with koi , cormorants and local wildlife.

If you go there , go early and plan to spend a full day of relaxed walking ( wear very comfortable shoes ).
... many photo ops. if you're a camera buff.

Also - Not to be missed !
Next door is the American Orchid Society HQ.
... an Orchid lover's heaven !!!!
Gardens / greenhouse / flower shop ....
Could be a side trip in itself.

If you live , or visit , anywhere in Florida ,
don't miss this gem of a non-touristy wonder.

It's so amazing. I have been three times in the last 4 months and I live two hours away, and can't wait to go again. The peace and quiet are so relaxing and enjoyable I leave feeling I just left from getting a massage. My favorite part is the Bamboo forest, especially if I am the only one walking through at that moment. When the wind rustles the leaves it sounds like the most gentle of rain storms. Then you hear the beautifully eerie creak of the Bamboo; it puts your mind into a relaxed state. Go with family, friends or go alone and just have time to yourself to sit on one of the many strategically placed benches. You will never tire of seeing the amazing Bonsais, the Koi and turtles, the rock gardens or the ever wonderful exhibits in the museum.

This was an excellent place to visit. Museum was so-so; included a ten-minute movie on the museum and life of its founder, George Morikami. There were very few beautiful paintings and lacquer pieces, but what was there was astounding. There was an exhibit regarding what the Japanese do for fun, which was very good, and highly authentic. The gardens, however, are what impressed me the most. Beginning with authentic Japanese architectural motifs like styled bridges, lanterns, et al, the garden follows a long path of beautiful plants and exotic flowers, winding along a beautiful man-made pond. There are even several Zen rock gardens, and a pond with orange and white Koi fish, about two feet long. Finishing off is an authentic tea house. Truly a wonderful experience! Students can get in for $6! There is also a very good Japanese cafe onsite, with a great view of the gardens. I recommend the Miso soup; sushi and other Asian delights (I ordered the chicken curry) are available, too.

“The BEST gardens I've ever visited?”

We spent about 2hrs here on a saturday morning, but should have spent more. Possibly the most beautiful garden I've ever visited. It all encompasses a fairly large lake, the pathways are manicured with pebbles, picturesque bridges, and the more than frequent bench. Theres not too much color, but the lushness of the gardens, as well as the tranquility the gardens somehow magically create are more than enough to set ones soul at ease. There are definate styles or maybe periods of gardening that we strolled through, and each is strangely unique. The best was the colection of bonsai trees. Theres an array of wildlife around the lake, Koi, birds, etc. They try really hard to capture the history of it all, but it was a little confusing and uninteresting to me. Theres also a fine looking library of all things asian, and a small museum of artifacts to browse. I wish we would have taken time to eat at the cafe.
