This was a field trip for 2nd graders and I volunteered to help. The facility is small, but exhibits of reptiles are well done. There are four venom extraction centers in the U. S. Highlights were: handling non-poisonous snakes, watching venom extractions from rattlesnakes, water moccasins, cobras, two informative sessions with employees, seeing the extraction lab, visiting turtles and alligators in safe enclosures in the adjoining woods.
Fun tidbits the kids learned were how turtles regulate their body temperature via their shells, how a hurricane caused the release of hundreds of snakes into the Everglades, a hunter finding a 75 lb deer in the stomach of one of those escaped snakes, and meeting a man who has been bitten 11 different times by poisonous snakes. The guides were informative and knew how to hold the attention of young children. Time spent was approximately three hours. You can visit their website to learn more.
