“Old rooms & Cockroach!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

I booked this room for 2 reasons: high trip advisor reviews & the fact it could comfortably hold 5 adults. When we arrived we were a little shocked...the rooms were extremely old. The front room (when you first open the door) had two beds, then you walked through the bathroom area, then at the back was the pull out couch, kitchenette and balcony. It would have been nice for several reasons if the bed room and kitchen were flipped...then we could have heard the ocean while sleeping. Also, the balcony door is a door that will not stay open, we had to prop it open with a chair--not sure why there wasn't a sliding glass door?

Anyway, there was mold on the ceiling tiles, a cockroach crushed on the floor, and a coffee filter filled with coffee in the sink when we arrived in the room! So who knows how well they actually 'clean'. It was an ok hotel, but our other family stayed in another hotel for the same prices (Wyndham) and it was a million times nicer and in the heart of everything. Sun Viking Lodge is far away from the boardwalk.

When you own and operate a motel, your goal is always to make your guests happy; unfortunately, sometimes we fall short. So first, I would like to apologize to these guests for not enjoying their stay with us. I can certainly understand that when we are compared to a National luxury resort like the Wyndham which is also a time-share property, we would certainly fall short. Our advertising does point out that we offer “casual accommodations” in a relaxed atmosphere and that we do not offer luxury or upscale services.

I understand that some guests may like to have their bedroom facing the ocean and to sleep with their doors open to hear the waves; however, we don’t encourage this due to humidity damage to our furnishings. Having the living room facing the ocean and the bedroom facing the front of the hotel, also allows, for example, children to take a nap in the bedroom while the rest of the family watch the TV and the ocean, eat or snack in the kitchen or just enjoy the oceanfront balcony. If the bedroom and living rooms were “flipped” as this guest suggested, then you would not see the ocean all day long unless you were in the bedroom. Obviously, when it comes to floor plans, everyone has personal preferences.

We specifically do not have sliding glass doors in our oceanfront rooms and specifically designed the building to have permanent large glass windows to view the ocean and an actual solid door facing the ocean and oceanfront balcony. This was done purposefully for protection against hurricanes and high winds; sliding glass doors can blow out; solid wood doors offer more protection. In addition, more “rain” can blow through the edges of the sliding glass doors. Lastly, winds constantly blow sand onto the sliding glass door tracts resulting in poorly operating doors. In addition, these doors are designed not to automatically stay open, again, due to humidity damage to our furnishings.

I am not sure about the comment about mold on the ceiling tile – none of our rooms have ceiling tile. I’m not saying that we have never had mold on our ceiling. If you operate in a humid atmosphere, occasionally, you have mold; every hotel on the ocean occasionally has mold. When this happens, and it happens rarely, we clean and treat the mold. There certainly is no excuse for the “crushed cockroach” on the floor in the corner or the used coffee filter in the sink. We have no record that any of these complaints were given to our management or front desk. Had this happened, we would have sent up the housekeeping supervisor to immediately rectify the problem.

I certainly hope that this guest does not judge ALL Daytona Beach hotels based on their opinion of us. There are many fine hotels and resorts here in Daytona.

Once again, thank you taking the time to send in this review.

I would like to thank this guest for taking the time to send in such a nice review. It was nice to read they enjoyed their stay and rated us so high in all the categories. We do have many of our guests make the same comments saying how friendly our staff is. We are very fortunate as many of our employees have been here for over 15 years and some even 25 years or more!

We all look forward to welcoming this family back to enjoy a wonderful and relaxing family get-a-way at the beach.

Thank you again for your review.

My family has been going to this hotel for the last 4 summers for our annual get together. We have kids from toddlers to teens and there is something for all of them to do. Plus the adults love the daily Bingo games. We went there for the slide the first year but honestly the kids love all the other activities even more especially the water balloon toss. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. They even send you discounts to return.

It is always a pleasure to get a review by a repeat guest. Reading that this family stayed with us last August and the past 4 summers warms our hearts. Family time is so important, especially in this hectic world; the kids will always remember the good times they spent together as a family during their beachside vacations. These memories are precious and are more meaningful than anything money can buy.

We would like to thank this family for their loyalty and kind words and we look forward to welcoming them back to the Sun Viking Lodge . . . a place where they are always welcome!

We arrived and walked in too the lobby for a friendly welcome.. Check in was fast, even though their was a problem with our room, but it was handled quickly and professionally... We ended up had to wait about 20 minutes to go up.. Upon entering our clean room, it had enough space to accommodate a party of five. Our bathroom was spotless and had plenty of towels. The kitchen and living room was spacious and clean. I open the door to the patio and had a wonderful view of the Ocean and pool area. After the mishap with the room,a kind gentleman from the front desk( I forgot his name) came by and handed me 5 free breakfast slips... Amazing! Breakfast was good. Kids loved the indoor pool!! This hotel is well equipped to entertain families.. My sons and nephews had a blast. My family will be returning!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the tower room 409 has a window you can open to catch a breeze. Lots of sunshine and pl...

As a motel owner, we always hope that everything is perfect for our guests as they arrive and during their stay with us. Unfortunately, as Murphy’s Law would have it, occasionally things pop up unexpectedly. As you might have guessed by reading this review, this guest was very gracious in waiting the additional 20 minutes while we addressed a minor issue.

How nice to read that once in their room, they enjoyed their accommodation overlooking the ocean. The housekeeping staff was happy to read that this guest found their room clean and well equipped. As most of our guests with children would agree with the comment that the kids love the waterslide! It is certainly nice to read they had a blast and plan to return as a family.

Thank you for your kind words and your most gracious remarks.

We took an impromptu visit to Daytona Beach and parked and walked the beach. We spotted Sun Viking Lodge which was still busy and going strong. We stayed there with our kids some 27 and 25 years ago and loved it. We decided to see if they had a room. We got a lovely room beside the indoor pool looking out at the beautiful ocean. Tried out the outdoor waterslide for old time sake. This hotel has been run by the same owners for 43 years. They know how to run a good quality hotel at a reasonable price. We loved it 25 years ago and still do!

Imagine our surprise to read that this couple’s last visit with us was 27 years ago – wow, I think that might be a record! Yes, it’s true, we’ve just started our 43rd year of owning the Sun Viking Lodge, resulting in a large number of repeat guests that are now 3rd and 4th generations!

I certainly hope that this couple will return more often; if they wait as long for their next visit, I am not sure we will still be here 27 years from now! I was also glad to read that they enjoyed their time at our beautiful beach, their stay with us, their room, our indoor pool and their “slide” down our waterslide!

We are so happy that this couple decided to stay with us again and I want to thank them for taking the time to share such nice comments. We all look forward to your return!

When we arrived, the door to our room couldn't be opened, due a new door that was installed previously, the lock was messed up.
That room was a lesser priced room, they gave us a very nice, larger room with full kitchen, no extra charge.
Thank goodness there was another room available, it was spring break.
They were very accommodating, nice and helpful.
The rooms are very clean. Beds are OK, just not like home, but where is??
Thank you for a great visit. We will be back and would highly recommend.

This is a perfect example of how wonderful our guests are; they completely understood our dismay when finding out, that the newly installed door and lock in the room that was reserved for them, did not work. Of course, this happened when we were almost 100% sold out; a perfect example of Murphy’s Law! Luckily we did have another room to offer these very gracious guests.

We all experience challenges at times, but it is always so much easier when our guests are so gracious and understanding. We are happy to hear that they enjoyed the rest of their stay and we all look forward to welcoming them back to the Sun Viking Lodge . . . a place where they are always welcome!

Stayed for one night on Satruday, March 16th with my husband and two kids(ages 9 and 4). Room was nice and spacious(#502) Loved the indoor pool. Wish we stayed longer so the kids could have tried the slide at the outdoor pool, unfortunately it was too late in the afternoon when we checked in so the weather was a little too cool. We will be back!
