The Islander Resort / Esquire Beach Motel

Aug 12, 2008

After reading reviews from previous guests about how horrible this place was, my boyfriend and I tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt...but as we should have expected, it was pretty much just as the reviews said it would be...awful and uncomfortable and nothing but a headache.
We arrived here around 10 a.m. after driving over 14 hours OVERNIGHT from Maryland. We went inside to see if maybe a room was available a little early since we just wanted to sleep but the receptionist at the desk was very rude and told us don't even bother trying to get a room until 3 p.m. We again tried, maybe 3 times, through out the day to check in a little early but all they told us was there are no rooms available. But we found that very hard to believe when the parking lot was close to empty and we saw many people leaving earlier that morning. Finally, around 2:30, we were able to check in. But of course, something else was wrong. We had made our reservation from Sunday the 10th through the 16th, Saturday. But the receptionist handed us a reciept for only 2 days...Then was trying to charge us more then what we had booked our 6 days for. Ridiculous.
Now, I'm not uptight about a hotel room that we barely paid 500 dollars for for 6 days...but my god. How uncomfortable and unattractive can a room be. The bathroom wasn't bad, but the actual room was just terrible.
Then, there is the elevator. Slow as can be and the stairwell for some reason, does not lead to the ground floor, it leads to the 2nd floor. Very inconvient.
Then, the staff. I think the whole time we were staying at this place maybe one employee said hello to us. (And it was on the elevator so she probably felt obligated to say something.) The cleaning service staff was unhelpful and lazy. We were bringing our things to our room on the little cart thing, and one of the maids had their cart with the cleaning supplies in the middle of the hallway, blocking us from getting to our room. When we asked if we could get by, she said yes...and walked away, not even moving the cart or the trash bags she had in the way so we could get by. My boyfriend had to move the cart and run over the bag just to get by. Absolutely rude.
The hallways smell of garbage and are very hot because there is no A.C. there...so you sweat waiting for the elevator that takes forever to get to where you are.
The walls in the room are very thin and you can hear everything going on in the next room...The doors slam, the showers are loud and you can hear the flushing toilet NEXT door...and it's a long, loud flush.
The only good thing about this place is the pool...and that's about it.

I love Daytona Beach and look forward to the next time I can come here, but I will never stay at the Islander Hotel again. I would say this hotel is suitable for college frat boys that just want to come to the beach and get drunk and sleep.

This is absolutely the worst hotel we have ever seen. We arrived the weekend of 4th of July. The staff was not helpful it took 45 minutes to check in just to get in the dirtiest room we have ever seen. When we let the manager know we were not happy and would be checking out we had no luck getting a refund. By the way Orbitz was no help either. We checked into Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center. We paid for two hotels however the second choice was deserving of 5 star and more.

These rooms are outdated to say the least. I had an oceanfront with a mini kitchen but had to jockey for it. Make sure if you want a oceanfront that's exactly what's booked. Can't tell you the number of people who thought they were getting oceanfront but instead ended up with peekaboo views from the side. Be very careful in the shower as the water will go from pleasant to icy cold or scalding hot in seconds and may remain that way for awhile. Walls are very thin so listening to your neighbors tv and conversation can be a bit annoying. If booking thru one of the discount clubs, travelocity etc..be sure to inquire about the 5 dollar a day parking fee that is not mentioned anywhere until check-in. Keep in mind this is not valet or some other lot, but parking right there on site so bring a car pay the price. If you are a coffee drinker don't expect any to be in your room. Coffee pot yes, but they don't offer the little coffee packets or filters so bring your own.The continental breakfast leaves much to be desired but fortunately Denny's is just across the street as is the Red Lobster. If you want to use the built in safe within the room expect another $1.50 per day. I was there for the longest 10 days due to prepayment so I had a very good feel for their operation.

My husband was staying at The Islander for business and I decided to drive up and visit him for the weekend. I wasn't expecting much as his company isn't known for shelling out a lot of money for hotels. I went up Thanksgiving weekend and definately picked the wrong weekend for a visit. It was the Pop Warner Football Championships and busloads of kids had taken over the hotel. The staff did their best to keep up but were clearly overwhelmed. The hotel is old and a bit run down. The rooms are small and the bathrooms even smaller. But overall, it was clean and the beds were comfortable. I didn't get to sample the free breakfast or swim in the heated outdoor pool because of the large crowd there that weekend, but I do intend to go back one more time this month while the hotel is empty. There is a beautiful view of the ocean from the balcony and a nice sized swimming pool that I intend to enjoy this time around. Final review - very basic accommodations for a low price.

My experience at the Islander was terrible, as far as the housekeeping. My son football team and I stayed for a whole week, we enjoyed the stay but housekeeping did not want to clean our rooms, they barely left towels, and if we complained to front desk there wasn't anything they could or would even try to do to satisfy the guest. I was unhappy with that, I had a double bed room with 3 nine year old boys with no wash cloths or bath towels all week. I got up and went to Walmart and purchased enough towels to last us throughout our stay. I think they need to work on customer service because front desk was rude in a way! Sorry but I don't recommend nobody to stay there but I did love the ocean view from my balcony!
