The Bahama Bay was absolutely superb. I agree with the reviewer who stated that you want for nothing. I had emailed the resort directly as I work for an airline and requested an airline rate. We decided to arrive a day early and emailed that request but we didn't get a reply. We found out on arrival back home that the reservations clerk had been on holiday, however, none of this turned out to be a problem at all and we actually ended up staying an extra 3 days as the accommodation was way above expectations. (We missed our trip to Niagara tho'!) We had also booked a two-bedroomed condo and were upgraded to a 3-bedroom. The condo has everything that you could possibly need - microwave, cooker with oven, fridge-freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron & board, food mixer, cutlery, crockery etc, TV, DVD, CD player, lots of towels, which you just washed and tumbled every other day - no hassle - and some toiletries and a couple of dish washer tablets. There were two little balconies with bug screens but the mossies weren't out when we were there.
Supplies - The nearby Wallmart and Publix stores have cheap washer and dish washer tablets in small quantities so there isn't any real worry if you don't take them with you.
I noted before we went that a reviewer had a problem with the safe but staff did not attend to it within what they considered a reasonable time. We also had a problem with the safe as it just wouldn't open one day. The handyman arrived within 3 minutes of us calling the concierge and he speedily and efficiently dealt with the problem.
Tip about the internet - a few reviewers mentioned the fact that there were never any internet cards. I found this too but the reception staff gave me a great tip. There's a library on the I192 next to the Publix who offer free internet access. The library staff are just so lovely and very helpful/knowledgable about Orlando. I also went to the tourist office accross the road once the library was closed and the chap allowed me to use the internet for 15 mins without charge. I think that for 5USD you can get an hour's usage, tho'.
Biggest tip - I'm not sure if I'm allowed to state this but my biggest tip for anyone visiting Florida is to use the Bank of America ATM (there's one next to Wallmart on the US27, 2 mins from the resort). Use a Nationwide flexaccount debit card and you get a great exchange rate (bank rate, not tourist) and there's no foreign exchange or bank charge.
Getting there - it's actually quite easy as you can follow signposts for Disney from the airport then onto I192, merge left onto US27 and Florence Villa Grove Road is the turnoff you want to take - it's the next left after Bass Lake Resort - so we just looked out for that resort on the left , stuck with the left lane and took the next turnoff. The resort is at the end of Florence Villa Grove Road - the address is Gran Bahama Bay Boulevard but that's because that's a road within the condo resort. The short cut to I192 still wasn't complete when we arrived in July but it didn't really take long to get to Disney or the outlet malls etc. The only day that we had a problem was when there had been a crash on the I192.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.
We will definately be back and recommend this to anyone. I guess if you want hotel-style accommodation where everything is done for you this is not the place for you, although you can pay for someone to clean the room daily and there's room service so it might suit. It was a great base for us with everything that we could possibly want and need.
Happy Florida holidays!
