“Hyatt Place Fort lauderdale: the Weird and the Wodnerful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Let's start with the weird: we arrived at the airport and called the hotel, twice, to send a shuttle to pick us up. we had to wait 45 minutes--that's right, 45 minutes! And then another Hyatt Place shuttle pulled up besides ours.

Airport traffic was excessive, and with stopping at other terminals, the two-mile trip took a half hour. (No one gave the shuttle bus driver a tip except us. In our opinion, hotel management and the traffic were the culprits, not the driver.)

The reception area of the hotel is tiny, shared by a Bakery Cafe and a bar. We checked in efficiently and put our luggage in our room. We went down for a late, light dinner, around 10 PM. The hotel has a 24-hour cafe. We're vegans and the menu had little to offer. We ordered a spinach salad and a mushroom burger for us to share. After waiting a very long time, our dinner was served. Unfortunately we did not read the menu carefully--the burger contained meat. We told hotel staff, and they served us a hummus plate instead.

We returned to our room, a wonderfully configured room. The configuration makes the room feel like it is several rooms: a bathroom, living room with a large flat-screen TV, a bedroom with a very comfortable king-size bed.

The complimentary hot breakfast has options for everyone. We enjoyed it.

The hotel's fitness center has all Life Fitness equipment (which we like): Two treadmills, one elliptical, one bike, and free-standing weights. We used all of the cardio equipment.

The hotel has a a pool and complimentary WI-FI, with a strong signal.

The Hyatt Place encourages people to stay at their hotel before a cruise by providing free transportation to the port, a few miles away. For only a tip, you and your luggage are transported directly to your cruise ship, a wonderful and efficient service, taking about 15 minutes.

The wonderful outweighed the weird so we recommend the Hyatt Place.

We stayed here a night before a cruise. It was nice and clean and within walking distance to restaurants and shops. It had a free breakfast and nice pool. When we flew in and called for the shuttle we had to wait for about an hour- they were soooo busy! But they did the best they could and were really nice.

Free shuttle from the airport was easy and punctual. This is a really nice place to stay before or after a cruise. We were six adults and had two adjoining rooms. Each room had two queen sized beds and a sitting area that had a pull out sofa. The rooms are huge. Coming from Toronto we wanted to enjoy the sunshine immediately so decided to have lunch outside from the 24 hour menu. The food was surprisingly good. Burgers and club sandwiches etc. We then soaked up the sun around the pool.
The breakfast was adequate and plentiful.
Every staff member I encountered was friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much to ask for.
The hotel is within a short walk from a number of large stores (Kmart, Marshall's) and box restaurants.
I had read that Los Olas was less than 5 miles away and took a taxi there for dinner. It was much farther.$30 each way per taxi and over 20 minutes.
Also, there are no room safes, which I consider a must when one is traveling with passports and cash.
The shuttle to the Port Everglades was easy and I thought good value at $8.

We stayed here recently in between two cruises for two nights and had a pleasant stay. The room was spotless and very spacious, and we could really spread ourselves out without being cramped. The front desk staff were not too friendly but helpful enough. The breakfast was nothing to write home about, and if you arrive within half an hour of the time breakfast ends, you have very little chance of finding much to eat, as the staff stop the service well before and start clearing everything away. They have a self service laundry on the premises which was very useful for us to do our laundry in between cruises. We hired a car, which is a good idea if you are wanting to get something other than take out food, or if you want to go into Fort Lauderdale. The shuttle to the cruise port is very useful at $8 per person and saves a lot of hassle. This hotel suited our needs and is most suitable for a short stay. We would stay here again.

We spent 3 nights here after a cruise and it was perfect as a base camp location. It is 15 minutes to the popular beaches and 45 minutes from South Beach. The hotel sits along Highway 95 so it was easy to jump on the freeway heading north or south. We had a rental car and had no issues with the Florida traffic. I used my Galaxy phone GPS (Google Maps) for getting around the area and it was flawless! I also found Tripadvisor Mobile App very helpful, it has a feature which finds attractions, restaurants, things to do near your GPS location, very cool. We discovered the Seminole Hard Rock Casino just 4 miles away from the hotel using the Tripadvisor app. Great casino with lots of restaurants and night life.

The room was good size with 2 queen beds and and Hide a bed couch. Nice 46"(I think) TV with a cool video input system mounted on the wall. The switch allows you to plug in RCA, HDMI, VGA etc and watch video from your own device. I plugged in the HDMI from my video camera and we were able to watch video that we had taken that day. Very cool feature!

Room was clean and modern, bed was good, didn't have any issues sleeping. Room was very quiet, didn't hear anything from outside or from other rooms.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. When we asked about places to go they had a list/map readily available. They recommended Dania Beach and it was great, 10-15 minutes from Hotel, good location, not over crowded.

Room Tip: We were facing east, away from highway, so didn't hear any noise from highway. But the building...

Our travel agent booked us into this hotel prior to our cruise and we were delighted with the friendly staff, fitness center, breakfast and room decor. Because it was chilly, we didn't use the pool. We're planning to return.
