“Chez Discovery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012 for a stay in March 2012

My friends and I were lucky enough to find 'Chez Discovery', a particularly thoughtful and well appointed modern house on the Labillardiere Estate, not far from the southern most tip of magical Bruny Island.

Set in beautiful bushland which is somewhat tamed with wide well kept tracks. Only bush and water views are seen from the house which faces towards the Tasmanian mainland.

With the wildlife for company we spent the days exploring the delightful variety of coastal bays where the forest reaches close to the waters edge. In other places there are handsome rocks and weathered gnarled driftwood sculptures which any landscaper would delight in procuring for a fabulous garden design. Here Mother Nature has already done all the hard work leaving exquisite landscapes for the enjoyment the insatiable beach fossicker.

After a day of exploring this lovely patch it was great to sit on the expansive verandah watching the swallows’ acrobatic aeronautic display against a backdrop of a setting sun. The ever changing weather patterns provided dramatic filtered beams of light through broken cloud on the distant horizon.

With plentiful supplies for the 3 night stay we could happily have not driven at all. But my need to see more took us on a short drive to the spectacular South Bruny lighthouse with superb views over Lighthouse Bay to the rugged coast beyond. Here the visitor can frequently be exposed not only to the brisk breeze off the Southern Ocean but a little whale spotting at many times of the year.

Another way to explore further afield is to arrange with hosts Adrian and Allegra to take you on a jaunt in their amazing amphibious boat. We were delighted to see dolphins on the way to a remote beach in the adjoining National Park to enjoy one of Bruny’s fabled coastal walks.

Hello to you all and many thanks for the terrific review. A fabulous time was had by all, believe me taking our guests out on the 'aquila' is as much fun for us as it usually is for our guests, even if we all get a bit of spray over us. Having a picnic lunch together and collecting you after your walk on the peninsula is but one option for a fabulous afternoon's recreation. We hope to see you all again when it suits your fancy. Till then, thanks again. A & A or .... what was that you called us? 007 and ursula?

Some friends booked my husband and I accommodation at Chez Discovery on Bruny Island as a wedding present. We'd never been to the island before, so not knowing what to expect, we took our car over the ferry and followed the directions to the peninsula and drove up a long dirt driveway through gorgeous bushland.

Arriving at the house and walking inside, we could barely believe our eyes - we'd arrived at sunset and the colours were stunning. Once we were able to draw our eyes away from the view, we explored the house. The walls are adorned with an impressive selection of original art and photography and even the little details in Chez Discovery that really impress. The décor is beach shack meets mountain chalet – a charming mix of wood and white linen. That night, after meeting the lovely Allegra and Adrian, we did some star-gazing from bed. There was no light pollution at all - this place is so isolated and private you feel as if you're at the end of the Earth.

The next morning was even better. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls allowing the sun to stream in and the views in the morning light took our breath away. Even the bathroom has a long window, perfect for bird-watching from the bath with a morning cup of tea.

We spent the day bush-walking, exploring the private deserted beaches with a picnic and the house binoculars and some other supplies from the house. Adrian and Allegra have really thought of everything: there’s a well-stocked first aid kit, water bottles to take on bushwalks, a selection of books and board games, and even a kite to fly on windy days. The kitchen has everything you’ll need and more: all the cooking essentials plus butter, pasta, rice, oats, tea, coffee, sugar and good-quality olive oil.

That afternoon we drive to the local pub and have the most delicious oysters, followed by another drive to the cheese factory. It's all yummy, but we're happiest when we've returned back to the house to watch another beautiful sunset.

I've never written a tripadvisor review before. I've always meant to, because I love using the site to find great places to stay - but I'm busy and never seemed to be able to find the time to get around to it. However, this place was so incredible that it deserves me taking the time to recommend it as a way of giving something back to the Tripadvisor community.

Seriously, this is the best place I've ever stayed. If it was in Europe it would cost $1000 a night. For what you get, they could easily charge a lot more. Go while it's still affordable!

“Put this on your Bruny Island itinerary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

We have stayed twice at Chez Discovery (Bruny Island experience) and can recommend it to those who are seeking boutique overnight accommodation at South Bruny Island. The location and district are stunning. This is one of Tasmania's best kept secrets. Walk in the nearby National Park, watch the waves as they come off the ocean into Cloudy Bay, and check out the glorious views from Cape Bruny lighthouse - next stop Antarctica! The stars are amazing, the birdlife outstanding and the peace and tranquility of the setting produces an unforgettable experience. The modern contemporary two bedroom accommodation is well equipped for self catering and is comfortable, warm and snug. Drink the pure rain water or bring your own bottle of wine to have while you look out across Great Taylor's Bay to Labilliardiere National Park and Partridge Island. This will prove to be a highlight of your visit to beautiful Tasmania.

“Weekend Escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 for a stay in March 2012

Chez Discovery in the magnificant 1500acre Labillardiere Estate on south Bruny made for a memorable and eventful stay on the Island. Our Hoasts Adrian and Allegra's enthusiasm and love of nature is infectious and their dedication to preserve and protect it for all to experience and enjoy is truely something they can be proud of.
Chez discovery offers spacious, contemporary accommadation. Tastefully and lovingly decorated and well appointed insid and out. Everything has been thought of and you will want for nothing.
The north facing bush setting provides a tranquil, beautiful, relaxing environment with magnificant bush and water views, private beaches and many waterfront and bush walks.
Experience the frog symphonies at sunset, airial displays by countless native birds and wildlife on your doorstep.
A highlight of our visit was a boat trip with Adrian and Allegra. It was an exhilarating and exciting way to see the Island from the water and share their knowledge of the area and its inhabitants.
We thoughly enjoyed our stay at Chez Discovery and will make sure we take the time to return.
Nat and Paul

Hello folks, can't thank you enough for taking time out of your busy schedules to share your views about your stay earlier this year in which by all accounts you did enjoy!. We always look forward to an 'aquila' sealegs trip, going out on the water and stopping where ever we wished by driving up on a beach, watching seals laze about and occasionally being lucky enough to see dolphins. A picnic, a brisk swim or whatever the day offers is so much fun especially when we are able to share this wonderful adventure with our guests and on a personal level. Thank you again for coming to the Labillardiere Estate and we hope to see you on a return visit!

This is a truly magical part of the world. High class house with everything you'll need, a magnificent property and gracious hosts. Places such as this are so rare in the world today, private, quiet and part of the landscape. Sit and watch the Birds, walk the tracks, watch the southern night skies or if you're as lucky as I was, see the Aurora Australis. Thank You!

“A stunning and sophisticated retreat”

This place is in a class of its own. Utter serenity, not a sign of human habitation in any direction, just endless water, beach and forest views. Over 25km of private walking tracks and 6km of private beach to play at. The owners are fabulous hosts, though you can't see their house from yours, and just the right mix of helpful advice and tactful privacy. We felt like Brad and Angelina staying in our own luxury palace complete with stunning amenities. All 100% eco and self sustained, but you wouldn't know it from the white fluffy towels and the piping hot water. We only stayed for two night and did two great bush and beach walks. No human beings for miles, just birds and native animals galore. Many thanks to Allegra and Adrian for their great hospitality.

“A charming oasis in the southern part of Bruny Island”

We had a most fabulous two nights at Chez Discovery - it was the highlight of the trip for us! Our hosts, Allegra and Adrian, are the warmest people you could find on Bruny Island, and we enjoyed very much our interactions with them. Chez Discovery is lovingly, thoughtfully and tastefully decorated, and set amidst some very tranquil and beautiful surroundings. We travelled as two couples, and found Chez Discovery to be well-equipped and comfortable - from the washing machine/ dryer, to the gas bbq and dishwasher. All the cutlery, plates, bowls, pots, pans that we needed were available. We enjoyed listening out for the swift parrots and spotting the yellow-tailed black cockatoos among other beautiful creatures. We travelled almost 7000 km to Bruny Island, stumbled upon Chez Discovery by chance, and definitely hope to return again some day.

Thank you, Allegra and Adrian, for such a wonderful time on Bruny Island.
