Great beach, free parking, clean park atmosphere, beautiful sunsets. Worth the drive off the beaten path.

“This is not St Pete Beach”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

It is a local beach that underwhelms the tourist but fine for locals to cool off or enjoy a picnic. Right now concessions are in a state of flux due to changes in County contracting structures.

“Nice little beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Fort island beach is a quite little beach at the end of what seems to be an unending road. But it's a good road! The beach is clean. The restrooms are clean. The boat ramp/dock is well cared for. The nature walkways are sturdy yet beautiful. The pier out over the water is a treat. There's always several fishermen there that will share their fish stories with me.
The water is clear and should be getting warmer and warmer. I always see schools of fish swimming about when I'm there.
I enjoy my time at Fort Island :)

“Great view of the nature coast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

If you're looking for the "real" Florida, this is an excellent example. Lots of birds and wildlife to see - as well as fishing from the pier - but I would not recommend swimming. Normally is uncrowded and the sunsets are always spectacular (the nearby power plant is easy to ignore.) If you're looking for a typical beach with lots of sand, crystal clear water, and hundreds of sunbathers - this is not for you. Personally, the thought of the "ungroomed beach" and natural coastline is more enjoyable.

“Looking For A Florida Beach.... Keep Looking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

If you are looking for a Florida beach, the real beaches are about 40 miles to the south. This area is called the Nature Coast. The Nature Coast consists of miles of (useless to humans) marsh land. Bird watchers and Birkenstock sandal purists may find this area comforting, but if beautiful sand, water, and people are what you are seeking, travel south to Clearwater or St Pete beaches.
There is a nice little hut that serves soft drinks and snacks. If you are a family, and just want the kids to experience salt water, Ft Island will likely work out well enough. At high tide, the water there is still just a few feet deep. A terrible beach for shelling, it's just sand and a boring / unremarkable view of the Gulf. Sunsets can of course be nice, but sunsets anywhere on Florida's west coast can be beautiful. If the no-see-ums are out, be prepared to be totally annoyed.
