We suppose the Red Fish has a nice ambiance when you arrive early enough to see the lagoon. Our meal was mixed at best. The calamari was great, as was the snapper, salad and tuna tartar. But: the "Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes 18" were anything but ... they were typical roadhouse five-dollar Maryland crab cakes, with stringy claw meat mixed with more breading, nicely crispy but not a lump of crab to be found. They weren't jumbo, nor was the crab. We guess the jumbo refers to the price.

The "kids burger" was charred to oblivion and could not be saved with plastic packets of catsup. The second child wanted chicken, so we foolishly agreed to pay full price ($25) for a tasteless and overdone hunk of chicken breast ... akin to your grandmother's turkey breast. Red Fish makes it clear that children are not welcome.

A nice wine list makes cruise prices look like bargains.

But we suppose if travelers like us make the mistake of coming once, Red Fish will stay in business.

How else would you describe dining under the stars and swaying palm trees looking out across Biscayne Bay at the jeweled twinkling Rickenbacker Causeway, the skyline of Miami and the not to distant flash of the lighthouse at the end of Key Biscayne. The staff is exceptional with non-intrusive service. The seafood is very nicely done. We started with a cobia cerviche followed by a delightful presentation of perfectly grilled Mahi Mahi and Chilean Sea Bass. Due to the hidden nature of this gem you don't get a lot of tourists or children. Tables are discretely seperated and your conversation is your own, shared with no one but the breezes.

A hidden gem slightly south of Coral Gables right on the waterfront of Biscane Bay

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! There is only one place to be at this restaurant and that is at the exterior dining patio to enjoy the incredible view of the salt water bathing lagoon surrounded by palm tress, and the Atlantic ocean beyond dotted with small water craft returning to the adjacent marina. Outside you can also enjoy a best view of the Brickell area and downtown Miami, Key Biscayne, and Miami Beach. Truly magical. And in Miami, it has to be between the end of October and April when it's sunny, dry and cool in the evening with good wine at hand to watch the sunset. The food is good, but you could find it as good or better in other equally expensive restaurants, but here it feels a much greater value for the setting and the friendly-attentive servers and staff. By the way, I celebrated my wedding here Dec-3-2011 (A party of 30) and it was equally magnificent. That's why we keep coming back!!!
