Fontana, at the Biltmore Hotel, is one of those places which seems like it exists in a land apart from the everyday world. As I walked into the courtyard, my eyes drawn from the fountain, upward to the graceful archways and tall palms swaying gently in the breeze, I felt like I was in a movie set in Italy or Spain. Every nook and alcove holding a small table with a stained-glass votive candleholder was a photograph begging to be taken. It was love at first sight, and instantly a favorite. It was magical and enjoyable even while there for a business dinner...I couldn't imagine how much better it would be to go back sometime with my husband or a group of friends!!
As we were seated, one of our party asked the host to tell us some of the history of the Biltmore Hotel, which he obligingly did, spending a good ten minutes regaling us with some of the ghost stories that the staff has collected over the years. Whether you go for that kind of stuff or not (the courtyard and the grounds weren't spooky in the slightest, but rather sumtuous and romantic) it was very entertaining and the attention to detail in the host's introduction of the Biltmore was only the beginning of a wonderful night.
The service was absolutely impeccable. Perfectly groomed, serious yet friendly and attentive, the waitstaff at the Fontana, dressed in dark attire, are the perfect example of professionalism. Polite, quiet, and anticipating your requests before you make them. Drinks are refilled quietly, chairs are held out when you leave or come back to the table...things like that can't help but make you feel pampered.
The food was amazing. From the appetizers - plates of cheese, olives, and roasted garlic...and several types of fresh, homemade bread - to the main course (I had half a roast chicken with arugula salad which was 'to die for') everything looked beautiful, and tasted just as good. And surprisingly, it was very reasonably-priced.
The atmosphere is second to none...as dusk falls, the string lights and candles seem like a scattering of stars around the courtyard, and each table feels snug and welcoming and private.
This is really an excellent place, and one I hope to visit again!
