“Is there a manager ?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2014 via mobile

Its been less than a week since my husband and I checked out from this terrible place after having chosen it due to its excellent location. We had no references about it but decided to take the risk: bad idea. Our trip started with a surprising " we won't be able to honor your reservation ( confirmed several weeks earlier ) due to a wedding ". Obviously, the wedding guests were - for some uncomprehensible reason - being considered more important than us. So, after accepting the alternative option offered, we checked in to spend the worst experience we have ever had in any hotel. It started with a constant vibration that wouldn't stop followed by all kind of noises from the rooms next to ours, slammed doors and yelling and running in the corridor up to almost 4:30am. A nightmare. Next day: another wedding with the same results....
Our demoted room was ok but it definitely is a 2nd class hotel. The shower floor hadn't been scrubbed in weeks so you could clearly see all shades of gray in and out of the tub. No shower caps, no cotton and shower didn't work well. Service at the Concierge's desk was good even though they lacked professionalism: too familiar and slow using search tools. The hotel's reception needs a urgent facelift : old and dirty cheap furniture, a worn out counter, and a 20 year old rug that welcome you to a decadent premise. I strongly recommed to look for another option if you are thinking about a hotel in Coral Gables.

I have known this hotel for the last decade and have stayed here on many occasions, mostly because of convenience than for any other reason. Whilst an impressive colonial style building, the hotel itself has no character and lacks any public spaces that offer any comfort or focus point for guests. Of particular note is the indifference of the staff which never ceases to surprise despite the regularity with which I have experienced it. I have found better hotels in the vacinity and would recommend this place, particularly if you are travelling for pleasure rather than necessity.

The scuttlebutt around the conference had it that the property will undergo some measure of renovations some time soon - to some degree a needed upgrade although still a very pretty property in the heart of Coral Gables. The marble and massive columns from which the name derives makes this a major host of destination and local weddings as well as business conferences. The prevalence of this events encourages excellent service among the staff who go well out of their way to help with directions, suggestions and requests. Airy and comfortable rooms line long runs of hallways that wind through a building that is far more horizontal than vertical. The hallways and rooms do bear some wear and frequent stains although generally the hotel is very clean. The conference rate ($269) was excellent value given the location, amenities and service.

Room Tip: 2nd floor around the pool

My husband and I recently stayed in this hotel for one night. The room was modern and lovely, the pool and hot tub area were on the rooftop with a beautiful view of the city, and the staff were friendly. There is a wonderful authentic Italian restaurant right across the street if you are not in the mood for sushi, the common local offering.

The Westin Colonnade is a classic hotel nestled in the heart of The Gables, competing with--and right across the street from--the Hyatt Regency. I've stayed at both hotels multiple times and find them to be comparable, with the tip of my hat going to the Hyatt on both milieu and service. The Westin got rid of its great buffet breakfast to make way for Sushi Samba, a good (albeit expensive) restaurant in its own right but rather overpriced and touristy. The rooms at the Westin are comfortable overall, but I've always found the service at the hotel to be extremely slow. During my last stay the lock on the hotel room door broke; it took them about an hour to get a locksmith there to change the entire thing. I found this inconvenience to be rather unacceptable. The room, moreover, was a bit old and in need of some renovations. I assumed I was given a worse room because I don't have Starwood status; nevertheless, this left a poor impression on me. Overall, I would say that if you're heading to the Gables, make the Hyatt your first choice and this your second. Service at the former is simply better.

I found this hotel to be delightful. Yes, it's in need of an upgrade, however it was very clean and the room was well appointed. We really enjoyed the location as it is within walking distance of many restaurants and shopping. The staff was very accommodating and more than willing to help with anything and all had a wonderful and pleasant attitude. We had a snack and few drinks at their restaurant Sushi Samba which were good and service there was excellent as well.

I wouldn't stay here for a weeks vacation, however for a weekend getaway it was perfect.

We love staying at this hotel before we leave on a cruise. The finishes are great and it is always clean. The beds are comfortable especially with the fluffy down comforter on top. We love the toiletries. Delicious green tea! It's in a great location to walk to all kinds of restaurants and shops. The staff is always very friendly. They often have large events here because the ball room is gorgeous especially when it's decorated for a wedding. Great location. Great hotel. We are members of the SPG family so it is always a great price for a wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the deluxe. It's worth the extra money if you have kids with you.
