“Not really a hotel anymore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

The David William was a great hotel at one time but nowadays most units are permanent residences. Since most of the building is made up of apartments there is no "regular" hotel staff around. The "front desk" is only intermittently manned and then usually only by the security staff. As other reviewers stated, the David William is tired and worn, the units have old furniture and appliances. The single housekeeper struggles to keep them clean and attractive. But an afternoon on the balcony makes up for many shortcomings. The balconies are large and overlook the tree canopy and the Biltmore Hotel. Get a room as high up as possible for the best view.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms that face the Biltmore Hotel have balconies, great views and no tall buildings in...

The property is within walking distance of the "miracle mile" in Coral Gables so if that is what you are interested in, it's perfect. Otherwise a car will be needed to get around. I stayed in a junior suite which was spacious and had a fully equipped kitchen and even a balcony. This was a major advantage for in-room meals since the hotel does not have a restaurant on site and the room service menu is very limited. Although everything was clean and in working condition, I found the overall look and feel of the place very old and decaying (e.g. the bathtub was literally peeling off). The place needs remodeling really bad. The hotel is not staffed at all times so for many issues you will need to call their sister property, the Biltmore. They also offer a "shuttle" service to the Biltmore but be aware it is not a real shuttle, but a car that drives back and forth, so it is not always available at all times (this posed a problem for many of us since we were there for a conference and had to be going to the Biltmore at the same time every day). A major inconvenience was that on my first day there they decided to have a fire alarm drill so the fire alarm started going off at 9 am and didn't stop until the afternoon, making it impossible to get any work done (much less rest or sleep). The staff was friendly and otherwise it was a pleasant stay, but this place is nothing to rave about.

There is no doorman and it's hard to find the front desk. You have to circle the hotel to find parking in one of the reserved spots, but it's hard to figure out where those spots are.

The elevator looked like it was going to break down.

The room was terrible. It wasn't dirty, but certainly not clean. The TV was the size of the TV in my bathroom at home. There were three meals available for room service. I tried one of them - it came 30 minutes late, served in a brown paper bag. It was terrible. So very terrible. Beyond terrible.

The thermostat did nothing to control the AC. I had to turn it off in the middle of the night because it was so cold.

There was no high speed internet access.

The iron looked like it was from the mid 70's.

The bathtub was grimy.

The hotel staff was smug.

The location was poor.

This is far from a classy hotel.
