“Great old world hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

This is a large hotel with seemingly old world charm. The staff at check in were great, the service overall was fantastic. The pool area looked very relaxing and was pretty big. The food served throughout the resort was very good. The room was very comfortable, as was the bed and the shower had reasonably good water pressure.

First, let me say that the Biltmore staff is fantastic. Truly excellent service from everyone. The front desk, the bellman team, housekeeping, fitness center, and the indoor restaurants. All very helpful, responsive and deserve praise. Additionally, the fitness center, which has members and not just for hotel guests, is very nice and luxurious for its size.

This is a decent hotel if you are old and like the charm of the simpler Don Drapper 1960’s, you are child-free or you are having a weddding.

It was a lot of work to stay here and overcome the many small hassles. Not relaxing and enjoyable. Here is the long list of things that make staying somehwere else more comfortable and a better option:

Wifi does not stay connected and is not accessible throughout the hotel.
There was 1 outlet in the room for electronic devices. The floor was the flat surface to place multiple phones and other gadgets upon and rotate the charging near the outlet. I stayed in a regular suite and a large suite. The lone outlet was nowhere near the “desk” with a wired cable for a laptop, which is strange and inconvenient.
Rooms can be small and noisy. They have not invested in quiet.
Moldy shower curtains that billow in on you when you take a shower. Bathrooms have no ventilation.
Other than the $8 bottle of water in the room, you need to walk or drive 1.5 miles to the closest option for snacks and normally priced bottled drinks. Same goes for decent restaurants. There is no small market café on site. The gift shop is for clothing and other expensive tourist trinkets, not food.
No recycling anywhere on site, at least that I could see
You can let the hotel drive you when their car is not otherwise in use. It can be a wait to get picked up from the Town Center.
The staff is nice, but the building is not child-friendly. The giant pool doesn’t have antyhing other than a few shallow steps, but right next to the dedicated adult space to swim 50 yd laps. There is no pool deck to speak of. Chairs are basically lining the edge. It’s a 1/3 of a mile walk to the Coral Gables neighborhood playground, which is actually quite nice. Note that cars rarely stop for the crosswalk out in front of the hotel, so be careful.
Service at the outdoor casual restaurants by the pool or golf course is abysmally slow. Lesson learned: do not eat at the pub on the weekend when the golf course is packed. The restaurant by the pool is slow just because it is, even when not crowded. If you seat a family with small children, speed matters.
The marquee restaurant starts at $105 per person and was empty the whole 4 days we were there.
The spa is exhorbitantly expensive, too.
Parking lot can’t handle self-parking guests where there is a meeting or event. Plan on using the valet.
Coral Gables is not near the beach. Which I knew, obviously, but this not a good destination for families.

Green Features: Lip service tent card to saving water by not changing towels or sheets, but no separate bins for plastic or paper in the rooms or in common areas.

The Biltmore is a classic old hotel that has hosted everyone from Al Capone to Jeb Bush. (The latter apparently has a standing Sunday morning tee time at the golf course.) We splurged on one of the terrace suites in the main building. The terrace was as large as the adjacent bedroom and has great views of the pool, golf course, and far in the distance the airport. It wasn't cheap but very comfortable. Surprisingly, the room decor is pretty plain both in the sitting room and in the bedroom, which are separated by a very large bathroom. Service in the hotel is friendly and for the most part efficient and knowledgeable. Restaurant prices are high and, unusually for a high-end hotel, there is no free coffee in the morning. Not even a make-your-own coffee machine in the room. Expect to pay $4 for a small cup to go; $5 for a large. It seems penny ante, considering the $22 daily resort fee tagged on every bill. They should raise it to $25 and put a coffee urn in the lobby. Finally, be forwarned -- the Biltmore is not near anything. The hotel provides a town car that will take you within a 2-mile radius, which essentially means to the Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. Going anywhere else requires a taxi or a rental car.

Green Features: I believe there are only four terrace rooms. We had Room 613, which had a very large terrace and nice views.

Room was great, check in efficient and friendly. Had lunch at the pool grill and it was good. Shower was great with awesome pressure. Service all over was top notch. Highly recommend for a stay. Only recommendation is for the the staff to not speak their native tongue in an elevator with other guests. Had two bellmen in an elevator with a few people speaking to one another- this could be mistaken as rude. One last thing- the pool is amazing! Overall amazing stay.

We walked around , sticking our noses in various nooks and crannies. Bought some golf tees at the pro shop. Then I googled LeBrons address where he used to live. I had more fun stalking his 17 million dollar house that's for sale. But that's me......

Assuming you are cool with being a good 40 minutes away from South Beach (which personally, I am), the Biltmore is a shows-stopper in Coral Gables. A mere 10 minutes from the MIA airport, a few minutes from Coconut Grove and the University of Miami, the Hotel is it's own little world. The service is great and their brunch is legendary (albeit pricey).

Room Tip: The Hotel floors are a bit of a labyrinth, so ask if there will be a lot of walking involved.
