Gorgeous, charming location in Coral Gables set back in a residential area! Steeped in history and filled with touches of a time past beginning in the late 1920's. Our first visit...and not the last. We are regular travelers with a preference for great service, location and surroundings. This was a wonderful choice!
The highlights...large, spacious guest rooms, comfortable beds with luxurious sheets, spacious bathrooms, mini bar, safe, big screen TV. Multiple dining options depending on the day of the week, fantastic work out facility, gorgeous swimming pool that is large (and I do mean LARGE),PLENTY of towels at the pool which is wonderful, plus free wi-fi (this is a BIG deal in an upscale hotel), 24 hour room service, beautiful spa and a spectacular golf course. We enjoyed restaurant dining in Fontana multiple times and loved the outdoor bar area with tables around the pool for breakfast in the morning. (Restaurants will be reviewed separately under their given names). It was lovely to hear the harp player during high tea and view the birds in their gorgeous bird cages in the front lobby. Several shops were on the lower level with a nice choice of just a few upscale amenities one would expect to find in a hotel of this caliber.
Lowlights...initially upon entering the guest room is an "old" odor...we actually adjusted to this and it really smelled like your Grandmother's house...accurate for a hotel of this age. There is NO storage in the bathroom...limited counter space and extra towels were even kept over in the closet. Perhaps installation of some cabinets under the sinks would be useful. No in room coffee maker...something my husband and I really enjoy and missed. The air conditioning had difficulty keeping up with the fluctuations in temps outside due to high humidity, rain and then blazing heat. We were ok with this but some guests may be frustrated with trying to keep their rooms cool enough. While the pool area is gorgeous, a hottub would be a delightful addition tucked back in one of the cozy corners outside. Poolside seating can be an issue as we observed on one day of our trip...the chairs were simply all full which proved to be frustrating for some guests hoping to relax on a lounge. Also notably absent was a service elevator for the staff. We passed staff members with various necessities for housekeeping, maintenance, etc., waiting patiently for elevators while guests used them. It just seems in this day and age that an elevator for things such as this should be a necessity in a large, upscale hotel such as The Biltmore.
Almost every staff member we ran into or dealt with was completely delightful. Standouts were the Manager of Fontana, Mary our server in Fontana and the wonderful new Chef! A completely delightful stay and we will be back!
