We stayed for three nights over the 4th of July weekend. July 3 -6, 2008. The room was clean and we were given a 5th floor room with balcony and limited ocean view.
My problem with this location was the small pool area with a concentrated number of people around it smoking. I moved my small children away from one smoker and then the next. Unable to escape all the puffers, I finally complained to the front desk. She shrugged her shoulders and said since the pool was outdoors guests were free to do what they want.
It was a hot, windless day with many trees surrounding the pool area. The smoke did not dissipate and was detectable no matter where one tried to swim that day.
I was really disgusted by the fact that the hotel had three large signs posted at various locations boldly proclaiming, "100% SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT".
Obviously it is not enforced in shared public areas, especially those occupied by families and small children. Courtyard by Marriot should not advertise a smoke free environment and then allow such behavior. Designated outdoor smoking areas should be established for guests away from common public areas.
