“Nice hotel for business conferences..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort June 18-22, 2011, for a business conference. The entire hotel staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The food provided by the hotel for the business conference was very good. Small areas for improvement: the hotel rooms are small and the prices in the hotel shop were expensive ($9.00 for a bottle of Tylenol?). The pool area is small but adequate and clean. The room prices are expensive for the size of the room. The resort is great for business conferences but a little small for families. A trolley does stop at the hotel to take you to areas in Clearwater. All in all a good experience!

Room Tip: Ask if you want a view of the beach or beachfront when you make reservations.

Thank you for your review of our property. We are pleased that you enjoyed the food provided, and that you had positive interaction with all of our employees. Our number one focus is customer satisfaction and we are happy that our employees impressed you! That is wonderful that you were able to take advantage of the Jolley Trolley, it is a convenient way to get around and not have to worry about parking! Thank you again for taking the time to state your opinion, and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.

Check in was easy. Autumn was friendly and helpful, and advised us that good parking spots were rare, so if we found one to make sure we kept it. Our first room was awful. I had emailed the hotel a week before with a request for a quiet location away from elevators, noise, and preferably with a king bed. Autumn said she didn't know if they had received the email, as there were no notes on our profile. Pity. It turns out that our room was directly by the elevators, with queen beds, and a view of the roof of the building and the vents from their kitchen. What a bummer at the price we paid. Fortunately Autumn promised she could move us the following morning to a king room on a higher floor. We were so pleased to hear that. In fact she offered to have our luggage moved for us if we were out on the beach when the room came available.

We headed to the beach, passing by the small and overcrowded pool filled with children. The pool remained full during our entire stay. To "swim" would've been to hover in one location packed amongst many children and some adults. The walk to the beach is at least a quarter mile if you want to reach the water. We were both surprised at the expanse of sand. Possibly the resort once planned other buildings on that site? Anyway, we found the gulf waters lovely and warm and we enjoyed that the waters were shallow quite far out. The sand was oddly sticky when compared with all other beaches I've visited. Felt like I was standing in pudding or gum, which was a bit unsettling.

Umbrella and chair rentals can be charged to your room and are about $25 for a full day, which only goes 8am-6pm. There are boat and jetski rentals nearby and you can charge them to your room as well. If you have a preference for sitting in a particular set of chairs, get out there early. Once someone reserves a set, they are taken for the full day, whether anyone is sitting there or not. Even getting out there at 11am the front row of chairs (by the water) were taken each day already, which was a pity. It turns out that they allow the guests at the Marriott across the street to also rent the chairs, so you are competing for a good location with many many beachgoers.

The following day we slept in, and since it was nearly noon we called the front desk to inquire about the room change. Jean said she had no record of our request, and that the only thing available was a king handicapped room. When we retrieved the new key, Autumn told us she had forgotten her promise of a new room, so she had booked the one that we were supposed to receive.

We moved to the higher floor, king bed, handicapped-accessible room and it was a pleasant surprise. We were away from elevators and had a view of the tennis courts and beyond that, a view of the gulf. It was a lovely view. Of course we also had a view of many other balconies from this location, and it is quite easy to see in others' rooms. The balconies are shared with one other room (small divider between them but not very private). SUCH a huge difference from our first room though. We were just thrilled to have a balcony that had a VIEW.

That night, when we were ready for sleep we kept noticing the loud bass sound that we assumed was flooding in from another vacationer's room. We called the front desk to ask if anything could be done since it was 11pm and we were tired. The desk clerk said the bass was the result of a bar a couple of miles down on Clearwater Beach! He explained that Shephard's Beach Resort had been fined in the past for noise disturbances but that the establishment had no respect for others' comfort and quiet. It was unfortunate that our hotel could do nothing to decrease the noise level, so we slept with the tv on to help blur the sound of the bass that continued into the early hours of the morning.

On our day of check-out we turned in our keys early. We headed to the beach after securing our luggage and enjoyed our last day in the sun. Once it was time to head out, the staff provided us a guest room to shower and change. It was a pleasant surprise to have the opportunity to enjoy our last day at the beach without flying home covered in sand.

The restaurants in the hotel were good overall. Rusty's crabcakes were absolutely heavenly and were my favorite dish during our stay.

This is a horrible Sheraton. The rooms are outdated and needs a facelift. The entire hotel is filled with families and kids - definitely not a getaway for couples. We would wake up each morning with kids running and screaming in the hallways. Our room also smelled liked smoke (and it's a non-smoking facility). The fitness center doesn't open until 8am on the weekends and they charge guests to use it. Next time, we'll pay a little more and stay at the Sandpearl.

The hotel was clean. I was a great family environment, and great location in Clearwater...beachfront hotel. Not able to tell you what the food was like, we ate out somewhere different everyday! The only complaint to mention is my rooms were on the 3rd floor next to elevators & the maintenance office. Other than a little bing, bing, bang in the morning and after maintenance met up for coffee and conversation every morning by my room.....it was great. I would advise any one to visit, just request a different floor.

A friend of mine and I decided to do a girls get away weekend and got a good deal on airfare and hotel through Priceline, which is why we stayed here sight unseen.
The hotel staff is very friendly, the rooms are clean and the breakfast buffet is wonderful. The beach rentals for chairs and umbrellas is a little steep and it's a long walk to get the water, but its a beautiful beach and worth the walk. The pool is a little small and filled with kids on the weekends. The place across the street called The Columbia has GREAT food and awsome mojitos all enjoyed with a view of the intercoastal waterway. We did not eat dinner at the hotel, but heard from other guests that it was good.

Room Tip: We asked for and got an upgrade with no problem, so that we overlooked the tennis courts rather than...

From the moment we arrived the hotel was amazing. We were welcomed by bell hops, who took our luggage and helped us check in. One really friendly bell hop showed us to our room on the 6th floor. We had a view of the pool and of the gulf and it was absolutely stunning. We were on our honeymoon and they gave us chocolate covered strawberries and champagne, as well as a free breakfast the next morning and 4 free cocktails!
They also helped us find an optician or "eye doctor" the next day - as I was having problems with a contact lens! Breakfast was delicious and there was a great variety of hot and cold, not to mention plentiful Florida orange juice...
As said before, our room was amazing. We had a MASSIVE king bed, which was lovely and comfortable, as well as a comfy lounger where you could sit and read etc. It was a large room - plenty of room for all our stuff, and the sink being outside the bathroom wasn't a problem, infact it was very convenient. The 2 free bottles of water every day were much appreciated. TV had lots of channels and the balcony was great. People complaining about a "generator" on the balcony are exaggerating in my opinion - it is the vents for the air conditioning to your room and without it you wouldn't have any air con. Plus it only makes a noise if you leave your door open and cause the air con to turn on while youre sitting outside.
We loved sitting by the hotel's wonderful pool, which I wouldn't call small but not massive either. There were always plenty of loungers free and its nice that you can sit in the shade or have a lounger on the grass or under a palm tree as well as right by the pool. Although it was boiling and humid, the breeze from the gulf is lovely and by about 3pm it was lovely to just go and relax by the pool with a book. The pool also stayed open really late and we went for a midnight swim and used the outdoor hot tub when it was less busy. In the evenings it was still was warm as during the day!
We also walked down to the beach (Sand Key) which was not far at all - took about 5 minutes and we're not the fittest of people! I don't agree that it is a long way. The sand was a bit more shelly than up at Clearwater but is still beautifully white. The sunsets from Sand Key beach are stunning and we liked to walk down to the water to see that.
For dinner we loved going to the Mainstay Tavern, which has very reasonable delicious food. We like quite informal meals and it served things like paninis and burgers and yummy puddings like chcolate pudding and key lime pie (would def recommend). It you want something more upmarket there is Rusty's Bistro next door, which does proper fine dining, or the Island Grille which is cheaper and more for families with kids. The tavern did great cocktails, as did the pool bar, and the staff were very friendly at both.
At the hotel generally we got the impression the staff really enjoyed working there and were polite without seeming too subserviant (like staff we encountered in other hotel), and were older and lived in the area and really seemed to know their stuff.
I can only dream about going back to this hotel, as out time spent here was amazing...

Our goal for this trip was to do as little as possible and lounge on the beach as much as possible. Mission accomplished. The Sheraton Sand Key Resort met and exceeded all of my expectations. Upon arrival we were greeted promptly despite the busy holiday weekend crowd. The whole check in process took less than five minutes. Our room was spacious and clean. We had to pay $5/day for a mini fridge but when the temp is pushing 100 degrees farenheit it was worth every penny to have cold drinks and ice cream in the room. The gulf view from our balcony was completely unobstructed. We could even enjoy the view while lying in bed in the mornings thanks to the layout of the room. My only issue with the room was the small size of the bathroom. You can barely step out of the tub without stepping in the toilet. Thankfully the tub itself was ample sized so I didn't feel cramped during my end of the day sand removal process.

The ammenities at the Sheraton Sand Key are numerous. We paid for an upgrade to a club lounge package and that proved to be a worthy investment since it included wi-fi, continental breakfast, & alcohol and appetizers at 5pm daily. There are several other breakfast dining options on site including a 24/7 convenience store which sells grab and go items. While on the beach there's easy access to the turtle express. someone drives a mobile bar around and all you need to do is wave to get them to come to ur beach chair and take ur food and beverage order. You never even have to get up as long as u sign the charge to your room. Poolside there's a grill which was always busy but we never experienced it because we spent our days on the beach. within walking distance you'll find the columbia (upscale cuban restaurant) and a seafood restaurant. The Columbia had some of the best food i've ever eaten. Also within walking distance there's a pizza place, an ice cream place, and a small grocery store.

On the beach you can rent 2 padded chairs and an umbrella for $25/day. The only downside is you can't reserve your spot before going down to the beach. Arrive early to get the best seats. You can also rent jet skis for $65/half hour.

No need to rent a car in clearwater. You can get anywhere u need to go on the trolley or bus which pick up at the sheraton and across the street at the sailing center. Fare is $2 each way. A cab ride from the beach to downtown clearwater costs about $8 each way. If you need transportation from the airport don't take a cab. Call 1st class limo for a towncar. We had a great experience and the cost is the same as a cab for the 25 mile ride from TPA.

Upon first glance you may think the Sheraton Sand Key is a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for here. Be prepared for the utmost in relaxation.

Room Tip: upgrade to club level and choose prime gulf view
