We went to Basque because Half-Off Depot had a coupon offer and thought that this would be a good opportunity to try something new. We are big fans of Basa Grill and Carmel Cafe both with a "tapas" or small plate theme. We were very pleased with the quality of the food as well as the menu choices (not too many, just enough). If you go, you MUST try the stuffed squash blossom with lobster risotto. My husband was left wanting for more (there are only 2 per order - I ate the other one!) Our waiter, John, was accommodating but not overly solicitous and was respectful that we wanted to order as we went along and were in for a leisurely pace. He had excellent wine recommendations - by the glass by the way - something a lot of restaurants don't do. The bombas . . . yum, yum . . . I saw someone said that they were bland, but what they lacked in spice they made up for in pure meat flavor - you really need to appreciate the combination of veal, beef and pork. Order the ceviche and you will be pleasantly surprised by the presentation in a vessel with dry ice smoking underneath . . . nice touch . . .
OK, on to the tweaks. Tables are very stark - no color, no lighting. Could use a little ambient light from a candle. Perhaps a small vase with some colorful flowers. A couple of the waitresses were in shorts - I know that this is Florida but I think that they should have a dress code - slightly more dressy or at least full-length pants, please. The next was at one of the tables behind us was seated a man in a tank top. In my opinion this is inappropriate attire for anyone dining at a sit-down restaurant. He should have been asked to put on a shirt or asked to leave. Sorry, my opinion. I'm not a fan of armpit hair in a dining establishment.
Overall, we will return. We really enjoy the concept of sharing plates and the portions were just right (ok, except for the squash blossom!) At the end of our meal we saw who I thought was the manager walking the floor, but he only went to two or three tables and skipped ours altogether. I would have shared my comments with him instead of him reading them here. Note to manager . . . maybe you should visit more tables . . . don't you watch the Food Network?
