“Wonderful - Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

My family and I stayed, again at this hotel over the Christmas period, it was our sixth visit to this property and once again we were not dissapointed with our choice. Once again the standard of service and hospitality was first class the staff were so helpful, friendly, nothing was too much trouble, everyone was determined to make our stay the best it could be. Even though the hotel is directly on the water the best beach is on the Gulf, through the adjacent Sand Key Park and the hotel provides complimentary golf cart transportation if you prefer not to enjoy the walk. By contrast from the pool terrace and boardwalk, which is directly on the bay you can watch the dolphins swim past, or for the active, rent a jet-ski. Alternatively, adjacent to the parking lot is a sailing center where sail boats can be rented. Not to be missed is the fine dining in the Watercolors Restaurant, the qulity of the food, presentation and service is outstanding and the mid-week three course "dinner-for-two" is very good value. Despite it not being the newest of hotels, the overall experience is what a family hotel should be. I wish all hotels had staff and service to this high standard. We will be returning.

Room Tip: Rooms directly overlooking the water on the north end are quieter than those, particularly the lower...

Our family has stayed at the hotel every year since it opened in 1988. The suites and great pool area make it great for families, but it is managements emphasis on service that makes it a place we continue to return. Whether it is the friendly front desk people like Brandon and Nikki, or the gracious and accomadative hostess, Gayle, in the dining room, the staff is there to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Room Tip: all rooms face the water

I love Marriott hotels but this one wasn't up to standards. The carpets in the rooms were filthy, the beds squeeked when you moved and they weren't very comfortable. The bathtub was rusted. This property is in desperate need of a makeover. This is more of a motel than a hotel. The rooms are on the outside of the hotel. I don't like heights and it was pretty scary walking to my room. The view is spectacular from your balcony. It's not on the beach, there is one across the road. Overall, I was very disappointed in this property.

We were booked from the UK to stay here after spending a week in Disney. This is not in my view a Marriot standard hotel and we stay in a lot of Marriotts. I would rate it as more of a motel - the tacky kind you see in American movies! The rooms are small - we couldn't fit 2 travel cots in with the sofa bed for our other child. The rooms are ok for 2 people max in my view. The sheets smelt dirty, the carpets in the room needed a good clean, vacuum and wash and the attitude of the pool staff was beyond belief, very rude and lacking severely in customer service skills. We were very shocked as we assumed Marriott operated a standard throughout the world. The only redeeming feature of this hotel was the lovely, charming porter who took our bags to our room and the front of desk staff and a staff member, Christopher who called to apologise and to offer us any help we needed. I would seriously advise them to all go and work for a better outfit than this one as their skills are wasted in this dump. I would also say the rooms with balconies facing onto the water are dangerous for small children as are the exposed balconies on the walkway on the other side. I can also hear a huge roar of the massive ac machine right below our room. As I write this my family have managed to find another hotel for us to stay in as there is no way I could face a night in this place. Holidays for us are meant to be a time for relaxation and time with our family. Hopefully once we're out of here our holiday can now begin.

Room Tip: Don't bother - book another hotel

The suites have great views from both sides of your room! The folks working the pool bar are fantastic and very attentive! All the meals we had in the dining room were excellent ~ especially the steaks. Two big screen TVs ~ one in the bedroom and the other in the sitting room which has a wet bar, with microwave & fridge. Absolutely a wonderful place to stay!

Room Tip: High floors are best for view and staying away from the air conditioning compressor and extractor fa...

Very nice place! Suites are beautiful and spacious but it is across the street from the Gulf on the intercoastal waterway though. Nice pool with waterfalls and bar. Steaks are great but pricey at the fine dining downstairs but several good/cheaper alternatives less than one minute walk away...

The Marriott Suites at Sand Key is an old-Florida hotel in styling and perhaps in fact. It has likely been refurbished. Many, perhaps all, of the rooms have an outside entrance on the west side. Our room was on the fifth floor. Exiting the elevator led one outside into the weather and to our door. We are quite used to electronic keycards, but the two furnished worked only a small fraction of the time. A helpful housekeeper assisted us (struggled) on two separate occasions to gain us access to our room. Why didn't we request new cards, you say? It was easier to struggle with the lock than to journey down five floors to the desk and then return.

Once inside, the room was large and clean. A spacious sitting room with sofa and TV took up the western end of the room, while the eastern end included the bedroom, two beds, a TV, and a desk and chair. A balcony with two chairs provided a rather nice view of the water at the far eastern end.

The two TVs boasted large screens, but the arcane menu system baffled at least one of us, despite our being accustomed to hotel TV systems. A microwave and small refrigerator were furnished. A placard in the room advised availability of high speed internet at $9.95 per 24 hour period plus tax, a shortcoming I consider fatal, since I carry my own computer, a tablet, and a smartphone. A business center provided computer access via Internet Explorer, if one chooses to use that.

In-house restaurants are available. The coffee shop serves an expensive cup of Starbucks coffee, but no sandwiches. Pastries, ice cream, and toiletries may be purchased in the coffee shop. There are no fast food chain outlets nearby, but limited food is available on the boardwalk.

One may use the valet service or self-park.

As we attempted sleep after 11 p.m., conversations could be clearly heard from adjacent rooms and/or adjacent floors. The rolling of wheeled suitcases could be clearly heard on the concrete weather deck outside the western door. The beds, however, were excellent.

In my opinion, this is another "Grande Dame" pretender eager for the tourist dollar. I'll stick to the mainland chain hotels, such as Courtyard by Marriott or Hampton Inn, and will not return to this hotel. I'm spoiled by free in-room internet, the complimentary breakfast, and the large selection of nearby restaurants found with most hotels.
