We truly enjoyed our stay at Island Place, room 108. We were right on the water as well as the pool area and were not disappointed. We had a queen size bed that was very comfortable. They actually gave us a choice of rooms when we arrived since we thought we would want to be on the second floor for the breeze. When we looked at the other room it was not nearly as bright and airy since there were only windows on the front and at the back due to the layout. Our room had windows down the side facing the pool as well as in the front and back.
We were somewhat concerned that with the pool being right next door that it would be loud but there weren't many people at the property when we were there. (Mon-Wed. before Memorial Day) If you're there at the height of the season this may not be the best room. The pool and jacuzzi were very nice and clean.
Our room also had a washer and dryer which was nice. We stopped in at the local laundromat to pick up some small detergent boxes which worked out great. The kitchen was nicely stocked with the essentials including a coffee maker. Beware that there is only one market in town which is very expensive. Next time I would do my shopping prior to arrival since the next nearest grocery is well over 30 minutes away!
The only issue I had with Cedar Key were the restaurants. I'm not a fried food fan but they fry EVERYTHING down there. (Not just in Cedar Key but in Florida in general) Since they actually farm clams in the area I thought they should be really great but unfortunately when we went to the Seabreeze (recommended by the hotel) the clams were so chewy it was like eating rubberbands! Their fried grouper sandwich is good for fried food.
By far the best meal was at the Blue Desert Cafe. I'd go back just to eat there! I had the pasta with white wine/butter/garlic sauce and seafood. The clams, shrimp and scallops were all perfectly done! We tried the key lime pie based on another review and were not disappointed. It was the best we've ever had.
We took a day trip and went to Crystal River to swim with the manatees. That was just incredible and I would recommend it to anyone that has an affinity for sea creatures. They're like petting dogs but in the water. They love to have their bellies scratched.
Overall if you're looking for a place to completely unwind and not do much at all Cedar Key is a nice place to visit.
