“Watch the Gulf, grill some dinner, read a book, stroll around town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

We stayed this week in one of the Gulf View rooms. The description on the website is accurate. We arrived earlier than scheduled, but we were allowed to go ahead and get checked in (thank you). All staff members were nice and smiled a lot during our multi-day visit. Our room was very clean - there was no pet smell at all. The grounds were clean.

The patio area has a big propane grill and we used it several times during our multi-night stay. There are plenty of places to sit in the shade or in the sun. The view of the gulf is peaceful. It is a great place to get caught up on your reading. Or napping. There are plenty of bikes and boats if you prefer to exercise.

A well-stocked little grocery sits just a few minutes' walk up the street, so we bought food and cooked at the inn instead of going to restaurants. The little market has a surprisingly good wine selection. There is also a nice roadside stand at the Chevron station - lots of great cheeses, spreads, fruit, and vegetables. We ate our meals on the porch because the weather was nice and so was the view. Many businesses close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (but the little grocery was open). The island is small enough that everything is within walking distance. There is really no need to drive your car once you arrive.

Most of the time the property was very quiet. Some of the small dogs were barking when guests left them in the room during the day and went sight-seeing. During the evening, the TV in the next room was audible, but fortunately everybody seems to go to bed early. During the night all was peaceful and we slept very well. The bed, pillows, and sheets are very comfortable.

Area to improve: the Wi-Fi is fast (10 Mbits per second), but it stopped working a couple of times while we were there. Even when working, the signal was not available in our room - we had to sit outside to use it. Adding a second router would be great. The signal is strong in the pavilion.

Overall this visit was a good investment of vacation time and money and I am glad that we stayed here.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a bright review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. As we all know when traveling - one is never sure what they will get in overnight stays.
We are pleased you felt our website description matched up with what we offer.
The issue you had with the wifi cutting out was because it took 2 days for the phone company to install and work out some bugs with the upgraded faster wifi we were having installed. If you have any information regarding outdoor routers or expanding these systems to cover a larger range please contact us. Otherwise this is something we will look into but are not very knowledgeable about.
We are thrilled that our staff of awesome people (Wendy, Samantha, Steve and Brandy) took good care of you. Our trust in our staff in high. We know how hard they all work to make every guest feel important and welcomed.
We look forward to having you visit again and seeing all the new surprises we have in store with renovations.

After traveling up and down the Atlantic and the Gulf Coast of Florida we checked into the Faraway Inn for some rest and relaxation. Stayed in cottage 1 which has a perfect view of the gulf. The location is a short walk along the water to Dock Street where most of the restaurants and shops are but without the noise. The weather was perfect and everybody made good use of the free kayaks and bikes. Sunsets over the gulf cannot be beat and almost every evening people come from around town to watch. The swings in the gazebo are the perfect place for this. With al the different seating areas around the Faraway Inn you will always find a quiet place to read even if it is fully booked. The cottage is furnished with everything you need for a short or lengthy stay. We were there for three weeks and just relaxed and loved it.
Wendy, Sam and Steve were very helpful and went out of their way for everyone. Thank you!

Thank you so much for your kind review. We are always pleased when guests enjoy their time at Faraway Inn and Cedar Key. Cedar Key is definitly the place to be when in search of R&R and a safe tourist community to unwind. I am so pleased you noticed all the nooks at Faraway Inn to relax and read a book. We try hard at the Faraway Inn to make sure we have just about anything a person could need during their stay with us. We are very pleased to hear that our awesome folks at Faraway (Wendy, Steve and Sam) were all very helpful and pleasant. We really feel that we have about the best group in Cedar key working with us. Apologies we did not meet you but my husband was very ill for a few weeks and we have lots of animals we tend to daily. We assist with a volunteer trap neuter return program of our islands feral and stray cats. We have had 856 cats spayed/neutered/vaccinated in Cedar Key. We love our island city and spend alot of time volunteering our time for animals and kids. Please know that we can be reached 24 hours a day if any of our guests needed us for anything. We always post our after hours contact information.

We booked gulf front room #11 for a last minute get-away and couldn't have been more pleased. The room was very clean and comfortable, and everything about the inn was quaint and laid back. The decor and furnishings are older, but not overly worn, and the age actually adds to the charm. The queen bed was super comfortable and the shower had seemingly endless hot water (so nice after a cold, rainy night fishing on the pier). The inn also offers free use of their kayaks and bikes, something we did not have time to take advantage of this trip but plan to next. The inn is pet friendly (can't wait to bring my dog next time). I was a little worried because in the past when I had stayed at pet friendly places they were always a little dingy or smelled of "eau du wet dog"...not the case at all with the Faraway Inn...if I hadn't known better I never would have guessed that dogs had stayed in our room. All in all, the Faraway Inn is a great get-away and we can't wait to get away again!

Room Tip: The gulf view rooms all have nice views of the water and large patios out front

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a nice review. Reviews are so important to our business and allow us to learn of things that are good and things we need to improve upon. As soon as the busy season ends we have plans to update furnishings in gulf view units and make gulf view units 10 and 12 with queen size beds. Though we are still in kind of a recession business has picked up considerably so we are planning for new beds, linens, furnishings for our gulf view units and bed updates for all other units too. The past 4 years were so off with the economy and oil spill that we were not able to do as much in renovations as we wanted. We look forward to offering our guests more mom and pop motel comforts to help make everyones stay more enjoyable.

The Faraway is a collection of kitchsy cottages in the old town part of Cedar Key. The location is perfect - easy walk to restaurants or the market, easy bike ride all over the island. And what's great is, the Faraway provides free beach cruiser bikes and kayaks. Since it's just across the small road from the water, you can use the cart to easily take the kayaks in and out. There's a shared pavillion that looks out over the water where you can sit on a swing or chair and relax. Wendy and Sam treat guests like family - just make yourself at home! It's a low key, easy going place that makes it easy to feel at home in Cedar Key.

Our cottage had everything we needed. There were space heaters (it was February) and window air-conditioners. We didn't need either one. Shower water nice and hot and good pressure. Bathroom updated and nice. The kitchen was adequately equiped for simple meals. (The market just a few blocks away is very good. It even has meats and some organic produce.) We were in #4, which was a great choice, since it is the only one with its own little porch. We turned the TV on once during our four day stay and the reception isn't good, but the office has a selection of VCRs (yes, VCRs) you can borrow. All-in-all it was a great stay and we would stay again.

We do not travel with a pet and, in fact, don't like dogs, but we had no problems with the dogs on the property nor any allergic reaction in our cottage from previous dogs.

The few things I would change: the bedspreads were nylon - like cheap motel spreads. The futon in the living room has a faux leather cover that made it uncomfortable to hang out on. And worst of all, our bed had a dip in the center, which made it hard to sleep on with my husband since we would roll into one another. Also, despite being called an inn, they do not seem to provide inn-like service. You must ask if you want your room cleaned and insist if you want clean linens or towels.

Room Tip: Cottage 1 is closet to the water. Cottage 4 has its own porch and a picnic table nearby.

I love the word kitchsy to describe our place. Thank you for your nice review and your suggestions to better our motel and cottages. Below I have responded to each of your ideas so you know what to expect when you visit us again.
We are located in the historic part of town and we are pleased you found it an easy walk to shops, market and restaurants.
We are glad that you enjoyed the bikes and kayaks. Wendy, Sam and Steve are awesome and we are proud to have them working with us in our goal to please our guests.
We will check out the TV in cottage 4 to see about the reception. It is a new 40" flat screen but sometimes we do have issues beyond our control regarding reception and our cable provider. We do have dvds and yes VHS tapes in the office for borrowing.
Since we are very pet friendly we are pleased you were not bothered by the guests dogs and found our units to be clean and give you no allergic issues. Wendy and Sam work hard to be sure your unit is clean and fresh.
The economy has finally picked up and we can afford more renovations this year. We have all new beds, boxsprings, linens, some furnishings planned to be replaced.
The futons we do not have plans to change mainly because they add an extra place to sleep if needed. We find that couches get lots of crumbs and hair and have been more difficult to keep clean in our atmospehere of pets, sand and outdoor environment. We can't afford real leather covers and fabric would retain odors and stains.
This motel was named Faraway Inn in the early 1960's by the Smyth family and we did not want to change the name after so many years of being known as Faraway Inn. Our apologies if you dissapointed about services expected.
As far as room cleanings we are a Florida Certified Green Lodging and we provide services upon request only. We do have a 3" by 6" engraved sign in the restroom next to the towels explaining our Green Lodging practices.
If you requested service and were denied that is something we need to know. We will have a meeting and go over the importance of letting our guest know of our green lodging practices upon check in and changing out towels and making beds, etc when requested.

We stayed in a motel room right next to the the reception. The room itself was cozy and had a microwave / fridge / coffeemachine.
The garden is full of tacky stuff which is a bit weird/cheap looking.

Overall location is nice next to the "beach" which is not big enough to place 2 towels. Free kayaks/bikes/

In contradiction to what a number of people said here the staff wasn't very friendly to us (we ourself are friendly enough) bit seems they have something against a younger crowd (we are in the 30/35 age range)
Room next to the reception is a bit noisy they are on the phone the entire day and you can literally follow these conversations.
Bed is small (1.70+ is a problem)
Rooms aren't cleaned every day

Room Tip: Don't take the motel rooms next to the reception

Our apologies that you did not find your stay to be what you had hoped for. We are definitely a unique lodging and have created a kind of outdoor museum at Faraway Inn. Our gardens are very flowery and whimsical filled with local artists one of a kind pieces supporting our local galleries and murals depicting our local history.
We do not claim to have a beautiful or large beach area but it is a perfect spot to lauch our free canoes or kayaks.
It bothers and suprises us greatly to hear that our staff was not friendly to you. We will have a refresher meeting on the importance of making every guest feel special. Our staff is between the ages of 24 and 45 and we certainly do appreciate your age group. We are a family establishement and do have some rules that some visitors find difficult to adhear to and sometimes may hold that against our policies. Our guests range in age from their 20's to their 90's.
Our units next to the office are in the process of having new solid core doors put up to eleviate the noise during our office hours of 8:30am to 5pm. Most of our guests are outdoors so much that these units have not been a big issue but for those who enjoy being indoors we realize we need to offer more privacy from office noices.
Our beds in these units are a full standard size as we advertise.
As far as the units not being cleaned each day that is because we are a Florida Certified Green Lodging and we only clean, make beds or replace towels when you request us. We do have a 3" x 6" engraved sign in each bathroom right next to the towels explaining this. We will have a staff meeting and it will be noted that you were not verbally told of our Green Lodging practices upon check in.

As my wife and I are part of a vacation program, we have enjoyed some very nice condos with oceanfront and oceanviews. And yes, the service at these condos has been pleasant but somewhat sterile. BUT...when you check in at the FARAWAY INN, you are the only person that the staff is focusing on at that very moment....until you are checked into your unit ! All others will need to wait and then they will become the total focus of this staff.

I can not thank you enough, Mr. Bauer, for upgrading my accomodations from a room to an efficiency for the original two nights that I had planned to stay there. But then, with a killing winter storm moving accross the country, I asked for another day to be added to my existing reservation. This was granted by a wonderful person by the name of Wendy.

However, this storm was coming into western NC more early than what had been forecasted...so, I chose to leave NC before it did hit my area. This then put me into Cedar Key at the Faraway inn well before my check-in time...but I needed so much relief from the trip that Wendy did upgrade me into a cottage that was ready at that early hour of the day. (GOD does have a special place in heaven for those that care for others.)

As this place is pet friendly, my wife and I were able to have our two dogs with us for the four days that we were there and I will want to come back to FARAWAY INN the next time that I go to Cedar Key.

Besides Wendy, there is Sam, who is so helpful in the same capacity as Wendy......Oliver, keep these people working for you as long as possible as they are an asset to you and to Faraway Inn patrons. Also, Steve is an unsong hero, but well deserving of the attention from all that stay there .

The whimsical things on the property were fun to find and photograph.......If anyone thinks that you have to have " five star place", just keep moving on to another place with your "bling". This place is for down to earth people that truly need a small break in life when it comes down to having a good and peaceful time while on the island......Oliver. Doreen, Wendy, Sam, And Steve give that to all of us that can make it to Cedar Key and stay at the INN. The place is charming, clean, and "old Florida". Again, being pet friendly is a big plus. Our two dogs took us for nice long walks while we were there. The sunsets, good eats and slow pace on the island is hard to beat.
