I stayed at the Sun and Moon during January of 2012, and I brought my touring kayak and my fishing kayak to explore the area. The location turned out to be close to everything, and the accommodations were really nice. In order to fish or explore, I had only to walk my boats to the water and put them in the water at the Inn's kayak launch dock. From the Inn, the Great Calusa Blueway stretches for miles to the north, and I spent days just paddling about and enjoying the great weather. I managed to find my way several miles up the Blueway without getting lost, and the silence alone is worth the trip. The wildlife is abundant in this area, and the manatees swam back and forth in front of the Inn every morning and evening. Without really trying hard, I caught two nice snook right in front of the inn on an artificial shrimp bait. The setting was relaxing, and was perfect for an explorer like myself, who is not afraid to travel to new places.
Curt was very kind and did everything he could to make my stay enjoyable. He even helped me load my kayaks back onto my truck as I was leaving. The rooms here vary. Some are really nice and perfect for couples. Others are a bit more rustic. However, all of the rooms are better than your average hotel, and they have that wonderful individual feel that you only find at B & B's. I doubt that any of the rooms have a view that is less than excellent. Plus, there is always food available in the breakfast area. I did not use the pool or hot tub because it was January, but I would have spent a lot of time in both if the weather had been a bit warmer. The pool area has the same great view.
The Matlacha area is interesting. There are a number of good seafood restaurants nearby. The Great Calusa Blueway alone is enough reason for me to visit this area, but there are quite a few other interesting sites nearby. Visit Cayo Costa if you have the time. It has miles of unoccupied beaches to explore. Also, Sanibel and Captiva are a short drive away. Check out the incredible display of stars at night!
Overall, this was an excellent vacation spot, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys kayaking, boating, fishing, kayak fishing, birding, sunning, exploring, photography, shelling, or just plain old relaxing.
