“Wow, we enjoyed the tour of historical launch sites, lighthouse and a few unorthodox stories on our former astronauts.”
I read about this tour from trip advisor and ask my sister-in-law and my aunt-in-law if we could add this to our vacation agenda. We were staying in Orlando and our plan was to take the tour in the morning and visit cocoa beach in the afternoon. We did not make a reservation and were very fortunate that three people who had made reservations did not show, otherwise we would have missed out on one of the best events of our vacation. We boarded the free shuttle bus and traveled through the South gate of the Cape Canaveral Air Force base entrance. Our tour guide I believe was retired from NASA who worked on the "Snark" rocket. He was quite informative regarding the history of the launch staff, research, attempts, failures and successes, as well as, shared some very personal (rowdy) stories of our more famous astronauts. Our guide tells us that the Air Force base commander allows this tour (even after 911) because he wants the tax payers to see how their money is being spent - how refreshing to hear this perspective from a representative of our government. I noted several WWII veterans on our bus (they had hats and jackets with the label) and a few middle to high school age children. All ages seemed to enjoy the tour. Personally, I was in awe of the courage, intelligence and patriotism it took to choose space exploration as a life path and the progression from the early stages to the more successful launches was amazing. From beginning to end each staff member we encountered were very knowledgeable, warm and gracious to us and the other guests. Some years back, I visited the Kennedy Space Center and I would choose this tour as the best. I can't believe it is free and that more people do not know of it. My late father was a World War II veteran and he would have loved this visit. I would highly recommend you calling and making your tour reservation as part of your Florida vacation. On an aside, while we were at Cocoa Beach, we were entertained by two Air Force jets possible practicing for the coming air show. It was a great day and we will share these events with all our friends and relatives in Tennessee.
