It is sad that this restaurant cannot consistently provide even an average rating from me. My son and I have frequented this establishment since they first opened their doors and it has in recent years been in a nose dive. This is further evidenced by the fact that initially, the wait would be close to an hour, but the last few times we've been there, empty tables and booths abound. While I can say that their diverse menu and beer selection is excellent, everything else has greatly suffered in comparison.
(1) It is casual. GREAT! But very pricey. The bill for my son and myself is always around $60, for PIZZA?! I always get a large house special and a salad with Iced Tea, my son gets a large double cheese and sausage pizza with a Coke. Tax and Tip - $60.
(2) The Pizza - excellent quality ingredients, but without fail we always have to tell our server that we don't want the bottom of the pizza burnt blacker than the ace of spades. Without fail, it is delivered with the bottom burnt blacker than the ace of spades. We always tell our server and show him/her just how black it is, then they always have a "manager" come over who profusely apologizes and offers to remake the order. We used to accept the offer, but it takes so much time to get the order that we just suffer through it. Only one time did a manager take the burnt pizza off our bill.
(3) Environment - nice, open, airy place, but at this price I don't understand why customers bring their uncontrolled, screaming children to ruin other peoples dinners. The visit prior to this last one, there was a woman with an uncontrollable 7 or 8 year old boy that made it impossible to carry on a dinner conversation with my son. We were on the extreme opposite side of the dining room from the child. After about 20 minutes, I got the attention of a waitress and demanded she go over and slap the woman for not making the child behave. The waitress responded "We have to put up with it too!" When I saw no employee was taking any action, I started to call my neighbor, an HCSO deputy to ask him to send one of his buddies in to have the woman charged with disorderly conduct. At this point the woman and boy left. I sent a letter of complaint to Mellow Mushroom and they never responded. After about a month, I called their headquarters and was told that their computer system was down but that someone would get back to me. A week later I called again and was given the same excuse. Finally, the person I spoke with contacted the manager, "Rob", and he sent me an e-mail explaining that he remembered that situation and was about to do something when the woman left. Rob said he thought someone else had handled my complaint. He offered a gift certificate. It came the next day - $25. For all of the hundreds of dollars I have spent in there, I was insulted.
I wished I could say this was the exception, but sadly it isn't. I have seen other patrons get up and leave because of the uncontrolled children at Mellow Mushroom and the staff does NOTHING about it. I have NEVER been in Pizza Hut, Westshore Pizza, Babes Pizza or any other Pizza establishment where the patrons have been so rude to other customers and the staff is so unwilling to control the situation. Even Chuck E. Cheese's has been more conducive to a dining experience. Sadly, this destroys the entire dining experience.
In short, probably the pricest pizza in town, used to be excellent, but they can't seem to get their act together anymore. That coupled with rude customers and unresponsive staff makes this a terrible dining experience.
