“Sand Pebble great beach location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2008

My family has just returned from a great week on Bradenton Beach. This was our first visit to Anna Maria Island and we were pleased with our choice. We were in unit #1 at the Sand Pebble. This is the upstairs unit. This condo is right on the beach. The unit was very comfortable and well furnished. Earlier reviews of this hotel complained about leaks and spartan furnishings, but we did just fine. The kitchen is not gourmet-chef ready, but was sufficient. Besides - who wants to cook on vacation! I wouldn't plan to have an adult sleep on the fold out all week, it is not comfortable. The new web site gives good pictures of the unit.

As for the island, we found food to be in the expensive range. The local Publix is well stocked, but crowded. Restaurants we tried included the Sunhouse (expensive but good food), Shell ( similar to Red Lobster - great service), Sharky's - (pub like atmosphere OK food) - Rotten Ralph's (very basic and overrated) - Hurricane Hank's (bar food, crowded atmosphere.)

One note - we booked a boat tour with Captain Kim and she was a no show. This messed up one day of the trip. I have not heard why she didn't show up and she didn't return my phone calls.

I have to say overall this is a charming place. Everyone we asked for assistance was helpful. I was impressed by how tolerant the locals were of all of us tourists descending on their little piece of heaven! Thanks for sharing!

This area is terrific. We spent 3 nights here, and were overall very happy with everything. Since we were there mid-week, we had the luxury of changing rooms, and did. The on-site manager was cheerful and helpful. The place we were upgraded to had lots of space on two levels, and had a view from the bedroom onto the beach. There was a full kitchen, living room with color/cable tv, and full bath with a washer and barely functioning dryer- not a major problem. Upstairs had a queensize bedroom with a tiny ensuite half bath- saved going downstairs in the night- and a smaller tv. All the ammenities were there, but the downside was that so much of the furniture was literally falling apart! A leg came off the coffee table, another off the footstool for the chair, and the kitchen table and chairs were all wobbly. We were in the same building as the office, on the beach side of the road. We found our place to be very clean, so that was the main thing. The free trolley around the island is great, and the area has a real "beach community" feel. Plenty of restaurants to choose from.

When we entered, our first impression was that there was only one room with a sofa-bed, which we were not happy with. There was a fully-equipped kitchen area, dining table and chairs and assumed that this was it. Then we saw a door facing. Through there we found the bedroom and bathroom - so we were happier! Then, we went through the back door and found a gorgeous garden with a lovely swimming pool - we were extatic!! I said to my husband ' Go and book a second night!'
Our apartment was across the road from the beach, there were others, slightly dearer, actually on the beach.
We will definitely stay at Sand Pebble Beach Motel again.

sense of peace, safety, relaxation, home, are just a few words that come to mind when i think of the sand pebble. i am a florida native/ resident. when i get time away, with or without my 3 small children, there is no where else i will stay...I am vowed to the sand pebble. for me i truly enjoy the fact that sand pebble is a place i can visit by myself but it is also a place that i love and can sahre with my kids. needless to say, the beach is beautiful and we always love watching the sun set and the dolphins jumping, but it is more than that at the sand pebble. the customer service, the down home charm and hosipality are what keep me coming back time and time again!!!!!!

Our family stayed at the Bradenton Beach Sand Pebble in February 2006. We wanted a place on the beach with room for four adults. The search began less than a month before our trip, so most places on Anna Maria Island couldn’t accommodate four adults, weren’t on the beach, or were full. The Sand Pebble had an opening, so we stayed there.

When I called to make reservations for five nights, they charged my charge card for the full stay immediately, even though we wouldn’t be there for another three weeks or so. I have never seen this before. I don’t believe they would have done this if it hadn’t been less than 30 days before our arrival. They did warn me they were running the charge through when I was making the reservations. Perhaps this is common practice amongst the mom & pop properties in this area. I dunno.

The hotel has buildings on the beach as well as across the street. We stayed in an upstairs apartment facing the gulf. It has two bedrooms, one bath, small kitchen, and a living room with a sliding glass door that leads to a balcony overlooking the beach. The kitchen was fully equipped: full size fridge and stove/oven, dishes and cookware of all kinds, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, even a blender. Cable TV in living room and “main” bedroom. The main BR had one double bed. The other BR had two twin beds. The living room had a sofa sleeper. Living room, kitchen, and hallway had ceramic tile floors. Two BRs had carpet. Washer and dryer.

Nice location for the most part. We like being able to see and hear the ocean from our room. One note concerning the beach: there was a 2 ft diameter rusty pipe running as far as the eye can see along the beach. I believe it is part of a sand pumping operation. It is unsightly and must be climbed over to reach the water. This is not a problem unique to the Sand Pebble. Other properties have this pipe between them and the water. Sorry I don't have a picture for you. It's a site to behold.

Anna Maria Island is very skinny at Bradenton Beach. So you get a fair amount of traffic noise into the hotel rooms along the main street. Again, not a problem unique to the Sand Pebble.

The room was very clean. Some signs of wear were apparent, but nothing appalling. Paint seemed fairly fresh. Some small issues: all three interior doors rubbed on the carpet so were hard to shut. No one took the effort to trip the door bottoms after carpet was installed. One closet door was missing in main BR. Two outlets were covered with masking tape. Coaxial cable in main BR was not tied down, so easily tripped over. Two burners on stove barely worked. Washing machine agitator seemed very weak. None of this stuff was a show stopper for us. But owners could invest some more money in upkeep.

In their defense, the two bottom floor units in my building were being completely renovated. And the units across the street appear newer, at least from the outside. So the owners seem to be trying.

Onsite management outstanding - very friendly and helpful.

All-in-all, this place wasn’t bad. We had a good time. If you are looking for five star accommodations, keep looking, but although our unit was imperfect, we found it acceptable.

OK there's no denying it - we stayed in one of the beachfront appartments and the location is fantastic - you are situated right on the soft white sand of Bradenton beach. Sea breezes and the sound of the ocean are with you throughout your stay, from shelling in the morning through to watching spectacular sunsets at the end of the day. But there the fantasy ends...

So why wouldn't we stay there again...? There are a number of reasons but the main one is the shocking standard of accommodation we had to suffer. The beautiful surroundings were contrasted starkly by the shabby, unkempt, dingy interior. The bedrooms were very small with badly stained carpets, the bathroom was tiny (even by European standards!) and nasty (especially round the bath) something was leaking, consequently the floor was wet most of the time! The floor throughout the appartment didn't look like it had been cleaned properly in a very long time and the balcony had broken patio furniture.

However, the worst part was the dirty, sticky kitchen with rusty old appliances, missing cabinet handles and grimy floor. Nothing matched and there were more crumbs than silverware in the drawers which meant that our family of four had trouble eating together (pass the fork dear!)

We complained (knowing that American standards of cleanliness are usually excellent) and were promptly met by the disinterested manager who tut-tutted, gave us a cleaning product and cloth and told us someone would come round tomorrow - no-one arrived - nor did the broken patio furniture get replaced!

We are glad that we at least got to stay in an appartment with sea view - part of the property is on the other side of a main road and it would have been far worse to have looked out onto a road and tiny shared pool area full of noisy kids.

Sand Pebble has such potential to be a really special place offering lifetime memories - it does so, but unfortunatley for all the wrong reasons! It is a huge disappointment and our advice would be to stay somewhere else - at least until the management has seriously renovated the entire place.
