“The Duchess Cottage on Useppa Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

If you want the perfect getaway, rent the Duchess cottage! Place was spotless! The owners were very helpful and even gave us their personal golf cart to run around the island! Ate at the Collier Inn. The grouper, real grouper was amazing. Went and bought a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers at the little store on the island to watch a sunset at the marina. The island is very quiet which is just what we needed. The Duchess cottage had the most romantic candles for dining outside and a gorgeous romantic bedroom on the first floor. We loved the living room! The huge chaise chair couches were sooo comfortable! I would recommend this vacation if you want to get away and spend some quality time with your family!

“Not what it used to be!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Service and food used to be impecabele here. Both have seriously slipped over the past year. Too much infighting between staff in the dining rooms makes for an uncoomfortable scenerio and a poor overall experience.

“Pretty place to anchor! Apparently, also a pretty place for lunch.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

You know how when you go to a restaurant on a private island for lunch, you gaze out at picturesque sailboats anchored in the harbor? Well, I don't: we were one of the sailboats anchored here. The island looks pretty from the anchorage, the holding was good, the neighbors were considerate -- although you will want to leave the anchorage before the really large yachts start motoring in for lunch: they have reservations, and some of them don't mind throwing up a three-foot wake to announce that fact. Our vote: great for an overnight stay prior to hopping off to Key West, or great for a lunch visit, if you dock. but don't be anchored there at lunch unless you like it bouncy.

“Lovely day out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

Took a cruise to Useppa with Captiva cruises. Only the small boat was available (about 40 seats), as their main boat was in for an overhaul - this being low season. The boat was full but it was a good atmosphere and the crew member Richard gave us a very informative commentary during the outward journey. Being a smaller boat we were able to keep closer to shore and see lots of wildlife - some dolphins, a manatee and lots of Ospreys.
On arrival at Useppa - a private island -at about 11.10pm, we were met by one of the islanders who suggested the group divide into two - one half went for lunch at the Collier Inn whilst the other group visited the excellent museum. A contribution of $5 per person was asked for but it was well worth it. There was a bit of a mix up over lunch for the second sitting - they could not accomodate us until 12.45pm. This was OK as we went for a walk round the beautiful island and beach. There are lots of trees, orchids and flowers on the island and we were lucky enough to spot a gopher before it dived into its burrow.
Lunch at the hotel was very good and the service excellent. The hotel is very atmospheric and a very relaxed place for lunch.
We had to leave at 2pm and had a good journey back arriving just before 3pm. A lovely day out. Cost was $80 for the two of us plus $5 for parking at the Marina.

“One of a kind experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

took captiva cruises to useppa island
Oct 16th.

Food was fantastic, came out hot and quick, and service was top notch.

The island museum is filled with artifacts and information about the calusa indians, bay of pigs, and the islands history. It was a tropical paradise.
