Two years later and I still go back to this website to look at the Casa Grande. It was a highlight of our visit to the Keys. We loved the room as soon as we saw it and wished it were available for more than one night. We were lucky to get in for the one night! The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean, spacious, and up-to-date. It is a perfect stopping off point between Key Largo and Key West.

We just got back from Casa Grande and we loved it. Big Pine Key is quiet, but still within reach of the hustle and bustle of Key West. John and Kathleen are going to retire from the B&B business in July, so if you're gonna go you'd better hurry.

The hosts are very friendly and can furnish information about local history and hangouts. Ask John where the No Name Pub is ;) They are also willing to arrange charters for snorkeling/fishing.

The beach does get sea grass, but this is a problem everywhere in the keys because of all the reefs and wetlands. The dogs don't bark incessantly, and we didn't find it a problem.

The house was very clean and spacious. The back deck is screened in, so you don't have to worry about bugs while relaxing in the hot tub in the evenings. Little deer can be spotted in the front yard and on the beach occasionally. The breakfasts are excellent, combining creative fruit dishes with more traditional items.

Overall, it's just a quiet place to enjoy a good meal, relax in a hammock, and then explore the keys.

“A bit pricy for what you get”

This property was clean and spacious. The architecture is very interesting.

It was a bit pricy for what you get. We would probably not stay here again.

“Loved the house, but...”

We stayed at Casa Grande the end of August. The B & B is in a beautiful, mediterranean style home with a covered courtyard area where you enjoy wonderful breakfasts and can soak in the hot tub. The host and hostess are very friendly and will offer advice, if asked. Our room was very large, very clean and very comfortable.

However, make sure you ask for one of the rooms on the side of the house away from the kitchen. From our room you could clearly hear the breakfast preparations from 7:30 until serving, as well as, the noise from the little dogs as previously stated in one of the reviews.

My other criticism is the beach - maybe we were there at the wrong time of year? - but the beach was covered 10 feet wide and 1 foot deep with dead seaweed, which also contained lots of dead, rotting sea critters - this created a very distinct rotting odor (not a sea and salt odor mind you). Even my husband, who is not bothered by smells ever, complained of the sickening odor. We couldn't sit on the beach and you could even smell it on the other side of the house in our room, with the a/c on.

“Off the beaten path”

We stayed at beautiful Casa Grande for two nights, March, 2004. It is just gorgeous ~ makes you wish it were your own home! Kathleen is a wonderful hostess and makes you very comfortable. Breakfasts were super yummy!!! The view is perfect, watching Key Deer roam around the property is so fun...I only have one small complaint and I'm sure it's just me. The owner's daughter-in-law (she comes to help serve breakfast) has a VERY hyper chihuahua that ran around like crazy, barked at people, that sort of thing. It just wasn't terribly relaxing to listen to a dog run full blast around the tiled floors (he had a little bell-like collar on, too) and bark at people that came out of their rooms at 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning. Maybe it's because it's SO quiet out there on Big Pine, the dog seemed so much louder. I don't know. If you don't mind little dogs running around (Kathleen herself has a chihuahua puppy, too, but we never heard him that I was aware of) and you really want to get away from everything, this is a great place.
All in all, I was pleased with the decision to stay here.
