“Stay away for now--major construction”

I've spent about two months this year at this hotel while in Wilmington on business. The hotel used to be a solid performer, but it is presently in the middle of a major renovation.

The rooms are typical of Sheraton Suites--large and comfortable, and the common areas are clean and well kept.

However, at this time, there are NO amenities available during the construction.

There is no fitness center
There is no restaurant
There is no club lounge
There is no pool
There is no business center

When construction began, the staff tried to be accommodating, but right now they couldn't care less. They have very little competition in the area for business travelers, so there really isn't much effort to do a good job.

The hotel now refuses to provide passes to a nearby fitness center (due to "guest abuse"), and they have eliminated their weekly "guest appreciation" events.

Trust me, you won't feel appreciated here.

“Train wreck...”

Sheraton Suites Wilmington

My wife was scheduled to stay her for one night for business. Upon check-in, she was presented with a letter (which we still have) which indicated that there would be no water in the building between the hours of 10pm and 8am. It was indicated to her that she could not even use the toilet in her room.

Finding this unacceptable, she asked for her money to be refunded but was told that the property manager had to take care of that. She accepted this and went to another hotel just down the street.

For the past week, she has attempted to contact the property for a refund and has not recieved any phone calls back. She has tried through the corporate offices, but alas to no avail as well.

This is the second time she has had a problem with this property, the first being that she was charged for two nights when she only stayed one night. This problem also has not been rectified dispite repeated attempts to contact the property owner.

Go some where else - there are plenty of other hotels who are willing to do whatever it takes to rectify a situation such as the above.

“Nice Hotel & Staff But Not Much To Do”

Sheraton Suites Wilmington

Norman, OK

We stayed at this hotel because Wilmington was holding the National Mock Trial Championship and my son was participating. The hotel somehow thought we reserved two rooms when I had only reserved one. Somehow, somebody claimed my room with two double beds so they gave us a king suite instead. This was tolerable because there were only three of us. Additionally, they gave us a $50 credit to our account (I had to ask). The staff was all extremely nice and helpful. The restaurant was OK but not great but the wait staff was very nice. The rooms were very nice and they give a lot of amenities in the bathroom.

There is nothing to do in the area and although the hotel itself and the underground parking garage seems safe the area just around it does not. If you go and don't have a car I would call a cab to get anywhere at night. One wrong turn and you will be somewhere you don't want to be. I don't know why one person said cabs don't stop there. I saw cabs around there.

Wilmington is a very strange city. It has no "vibe" or energy. It seems like an empty movie set at night. If you have to go to Wilmington the Sheraton Suites is a good place. My son stayed at the Doubletree and it seemed a little older but I can't really comment on it since I didn't stay there.

“Comfortable business stay”

Sheraton Suites Wilmington

Mar 21, 2008

Stayed here for 5 nights Sunday through Thursday. Trip was business, and I was glad that I was taken out each night by people I worked with.

Can't see why you would ever come to downtown Wilmington on vacation. There isn't much, if anything, to do. The place is actually deserted come 7pm or so, and areas around the central bus station at Rodney Square are quite scary. I was advised by people who work in Wilmington not to walk around alone at night!

The hotel itself is in a good location, close enough to walk to most of the major offices in the downtown area (so long as you walk at rush hour, for alleged safety reasons).

The staff were attentive and friendly. There was a guest appreciation evening on the Tuesday night where you get free wine and canapes and a chance to meet the staff and other guests.

The rooms are very large and consist of two main rooms, including a lounge area with sink, fridge and microwave. They were clean, comfortable and quiet.

The fitness facility is pretty poor - there are just 6 cardio machines (2 of which didn't work when I was there), a resistance station that was also broken, and some loose dumbells that belonged to a previous century. The swimming pool looked a touch tired, unused and a little dirty too.

The restaurant is fairly basic, nothing special, but does a good breakfast in the morning. A touch overpriced for US standards though.

I was checked out of my room by mistake mid stay, which was rectified immediately, but I guess this could happen anywhere?!

Overall, nothing to write home about, but clean and comfortable enough when the company is paying.

“Good but not great”

The Sheraton Suites in downtown Wilmington is a property with mixed pros and a few real cons. First of all, as others have stated, downtown Wilmington not only lacks a "scene," it feels downright scary and unsafe at night -- taxis, I noted, will not stop at the hotel. That said, the hotel is one block from two decent restaurants: Mikimoto's and a micro-brewery. I found the hotel to be essentially what I expected: not quite a full-fledged Sheraton but still had the nice comfortable king-sized mattress, nicer linens, and big, comfortable rooms. Views of an ugly financial district were negligible, the bed's linens were too small and half the bare mattress was exposed, a few underused parts of the room were not clean and the hotel is very under-staffed and you are really on your own if you have to unload any luggage. Overall, moderately priced and conveniently located, just a slightly rough around the edges while still, albeit barely, being a Starwood property.
